So, I'm looking for a roommate, again.
I am not getting alone with the current roommate. He's demanding, repeatedly and insistantly, that I banish myself from any parts of the apartment he uses because he can't stand to have people nearby. He complains whenever he can hear that I'm home even though I'm far more quiet than he is. :wtf:

I asked him why he's living with a roommate if he can't having someone else in the apartment. He's got 30 days to move out.

Do, it looks like I'm in the market for a roommate again. But this time it's going to be short-term because sometime towards the end of this year I'm moving to Queens.

I'm sure that finding a short-term roommate is going to be much harder than finding a long-term one. Especially because this isn't times right to match college terms.

FUCK!

1. yes, but you don't need that kind of shit at home
Home is where you get away from annoyances. Or, it's supposed to be.

I'm glad he's leaving. I'm very glad he's leaving.

I'm just dreading the whole process of trying to find a new roommate. :(

20. NYC???
I would KILL to live in NYC.

I am a very easy roommate. But I would have to find a good job there first. One of my favorite things about my life right now is that I have nothing absolutely from keeping me from going anywhere I want, and doing anything I want.

How much does it take to be a NYC roomate?

31. Here's the deal.
Edited on Wed Feb-20-08 10:56 PM by ThomCat
:)
I pay half market value for my apartment, so I only pay $1,100 per month. (for a very large 2 bedroom apartment)

The roommate's share, with all utilities, cable and internet, etc., included is $600. But I discount that because of the help I need around the apartment. So I am going to offer the room for $400 per month. (or less, if it's someone who I think will help out a lot.)

If you decide you'd like to give NYC a try for up to a year, let me know. I'd love to give you chance to come to NYC cheaply. :)

sounds like a dream come true.

AND, I am a wonderful cook, however, most of what I cook is vegetarian. I will include a bit of fish and shrimp and in extreme circustances chicken, although I hestitate.

Okay, Thom, we have to talk.

But, what happens when you move?

39. That is a good question.
:(

It's definite that I am moving, but we don't know when. It's a complicated story that I can't tell, because it personal stuff about someone else's life.

When I move out the apartment becomes available at market rate, meaning the rent doubles.

41. So roomates do not enjoy any rent control
that you might have, even if they moved in while you still had it?

Does that make sense?

45. Right. It's tied to the name on the lease.
Someone who was a blood relative could inherit the lease, but anybody else has to sign their own starting at current market value. :(

19. Once I move out to Queens
I'll be the roommate. I'll be moving in with a DUer that I've been friends with for years now. We spend a lot of time together and she has spent weekends here on Staten Island helping me out, so there won't be any surprises.

It's kind of scary moving (as you well know) but I'm looking forward to getting out of Staten Island. It's kind of the wasteland of NYC.

21. I can't blame him.
He has OCD, and that's how it manifests. But he didn't tell me that he had OCD until after he moved in, and I can blame him for that.

If I had known in advance then we could have negotiated these issues instead of arguing about them.

I definitely think he should find a place to live alone though.

That's why I only live alone now. I don't think short term should be hard, especially if you're willing to take a small hit on the rent to make sure the room doesn't sit empty.

25. The rent is already very inexpensive.
I need to have a roommate to do some stuff around the house that I can no longer physically do because of my disability. So I discount the rent to pay my roommate for that extra help.

And, because I've been here 12 years and rents can only go up 2% per year in rent stabilized apartment buildings in NYC, I'm now paying only half the market value for this apartment. I pass that savings on to my roommate too, of course, so that second room ends up costing peanuts.

But if I charge too little then people don't consider the ad. They'll dismiss it as a tiny, shitty place without ever seeing it.

28. While I'd love to think about that
I can't be mad at him. He has OCD, and I know that this is all a manifestation of it. It's just not fully under control with meds.

He didn't tell me about the OCD until after he moved in, and then just sprung things on me one at a time with demands and he expected me to jump and change everything to accomodate it. If he had been upfront with me before he moved in we could have discussed all of this, planned for it, and I might have been able to work something out to deal with his OCD issues without it turning into arguments.

While I won't blame him for his OCD, I absolutely will blame him for his tactics. x(

Much of our yelling is directed at our Border Collie, though. We're just glad we didn't get one of the "soft" dogs that are sensitive to that sort of thing. He just looks at us like, "WTF?" even in his herding lesson when Haruka's smacking a stock stick around him. Mick does love the herding, though.

a "no harm, no foul" situation. You didn't make any more noise than anticipated, so it was easy to ignore. And you were obviously keeping it down, so that made it easier. :)

The only thing my roommate will always be aware of is how much pain I'm in on any given day, but that's mostly because it's obvious when you look at me or talk to me. I don't actually make much noise about it.

Most of the time, she's a great roomie and we're actually really good friends, but this is definitely an area that she needs to work on. She knows, but sometimes she doesn't deal very well, and now is not exactly the time to talk to her about it. ;)

I hope you find a roomie situation that works for you, Thom. If we were in the same city, I'd live with you in a second!

Over the years I always had the best of the best and the worst of the worst when it came to roommates male or female. There were the ones who were good friends, almost like family and then the ones who were your worst nightmare, almost like family.
