1. he weighed
between 180 and 190 for most of his adult life.

His heart condition (caused by a virus, not diet) contributed to his swelling, a very common effect of such a condition.

8. Yup. I have viral onset cardiomyopathy
which led to congestive heart failure (CHF) like Dr. Atkins, and I gained 50 lbs on my small body QUICKLY--I looked pregnant. Diuretics got it under control, but now I don't have to take them because I'm recovering (ah! to be youthful and have CHF!).

The poor man is dead and at least one of us with CHF are not happy about misrepresenting him this way. BTW, a friend and I share the same CHF doctor, at one of the best research hospitals in the nation. He has gained weight from Beta Blockers so our doc told him to go on Atkins. I guess if my doc who specialized in heart failure thinks it's OK on Atkins, it's OK with me.

4. Sooorreeeeeeeeeeeeeey
It's not really a new phenomenon.

Shrinks become shrinks cos they're nutz.
Cops because they love crime.
Comedians because they are sad
Entertainers cos they are lonely.

I actually use Atkins cos it works for me and makes sense.

I converted to Catholicism cos I found something there that graced me.
(I still use condoms though)

3. Tried Atkins, lost weight
but couldn't wrap my brain around a diet that encouraged eating pork rinds but cautioned against a fruit salad. Missed bean burritos too much. Missed corn chips and salsa. Switched to a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet (plan to gradually go vegan) and feel 100 times better eating delicious beans and grains and fruit. Weight loss, too!

5. God, give the guy a break.
I'm not on Atkins anymore and won't be going back to it, but it was a very successful program for me when I used it. Unless you've actually done the Atkins program AND read his book on the subject cover to cover, you probably don't know what you're talking about.

If the guy died from a car crash there are people on this board who would claim that the Atkins diet makes you a bad driver.

9. Well, I dislike his diet and the culture he created with it, but
I don't think his weight was an issue considering his illness.

I dislike his diet from an entirely nutritional standpoint. And I stand by that point.
