Damn, I hate those Pedigree commercials about the homeless dogs
I tear up almost every time. If I had a car, I would adopt a dog tomorrow.

1. I can't watch them
I have to turn the channel; the first time I saw them I had tears in my eyes by the end of the commercial.

2. They are doing it on purpose
and it works...I would totally adopt a dog, but I travel around the city a lot on public transportation and I take a train a couple of times a month to visit my parents and I can't bring a dog aboard. I have three cats and all I have to do with them is put out an extra litter box, a big bowl of water and food and I can leave them up to five days at a time.

hardluck stories about animals seem to get to me more than the ones about humans

because bad stuff concerning children kills me too

14. I'm the same way.
David Sedaris tells a really funny story about one of his sisters. In it, he describes how she told him she wouldn't see a particular movie because she'd heard a dog gets killed in it. When David mentions to her that several humans also die in the movie, that doesn't make much difference to her.

5. One of the hardest commercials for me to watch...
is the ASPCA commercial with Sarah McLachlan's "Angel" playing in the background. It makes me tear up every time.

9. I'd hug Jack
just on general principle. A cutie!

I try to make myself and my sis feel better about those commercials by remembering that the specific dogs featured probably were adopted or taken care of by the company after shooting the film.

16. I wish they'd do one about why more dogs are being left
at the shelter...'bailey's family got a new apartment. they don't take dogs' would be more truthful if it was 'bailey's family lost their home due to forclosure. they had to move to an apartment that won't allow dogs'.

Not just dogs, but cats are suffering as people lose their homes, their jobs.

Another one I'd like to see (that we're seeing a lot of in rescue) would be 'bailey's owner was old. when he died, nobody else in the family could take bailey'.

Not all instances of a dog becoming homeless are because people don't care and sometimes I hate seeing it implied that it is.

18. I've been "dog shopping" the shelters and rescues for a few months and I'm seeing...
...more and more stories that amount to "Fido's family had to move and they couldn't take him to their new home."

By the way, while I know most of these orgs are run by volunteers they could still try to return emails and calls a little more quickly. I've been pre-approved by a couple rescues and a shelter but they and others take days, even weeks sometimes, to respond when I show an interest in some pup.

20. I know. I've worked with rescue
and it comes down to 'if you want something done at all, ask a busy person'.

I've griped about this myself but found out that the last rescue person I had trouble contacting was fostering 12 dogs, had a full time job and 7 kids. I think I'll cut her some slack.

19. I've got 4 rescued dogs and when one of the Pedigree commiercials
comes on I wish I could take in another one or two. I can't, and I know it - so I donate to our shelter and animal rescue groups at Petsmart. And I hug our rescues extra tight. The siberian husky isn't too keen on it but the 2 greys and the whippet like it.

26. I would love to adopt a dog...
unfortunately; my life is full of cats. Right now, I am feeding at least nine. The five that live indoors were all either abandoned or injured when they found their way to my back door. And then, there are my outdoor buddies.

My feral kitty, Scarlet has been dropping by for dinner for probably six years. I was able to trap her a few years ago, and have her spayed, so she won't be delivering any more surprises. In the winter, she stays in a little shelter I built for her.

Recently, a new vagabond has showed up. I named him possum, since I thought that was what he was when I first saw him. He is a beautiful Siamese. I hope to catch him soon, so he won't be adding to the population.

I lost two of my furry friends in the past year. One to FELK, and the other to a stroke. Both hit me really hard. I fall in love with the wild ones too.

We found a home we wanted to buy a couple years ago. Beautiful place on five acres. The deal breaker for me was that the home owner's association had a limit on the number of pets.

I won't leave without taking all of them. Besides, the neighbors say they will track me down if I do. :)

28. I've had three rescued dogs, but the most recent one
I adopted was an older mixed breed. We estimate he's about 12 now. He does not see very well and is almost completely deaf, has some bad arthritis in his back, otherwise in good health. I can't express how much joy this old man has brought me. He's amazingly adaptable and so enthusiastic about life (especially at dinner time). He sleeps alot and would prefer a quiet walk over more vigorous play, which suits my lifestyle. His vet bills haven't been any worse than one of my purebred younger dogs. I had some worries about adopting an old dog, but I'll do it again and I'd highly recommend it.

29. Consider being an animal foster
Contact your local Humane Society or Animal Control and see if they have anything set up that way in your area.

We do it here at our Humane Society and the Spring is when you run out of "foster homes."

That is... if you have the room and can give them back when they are adopted.

Just an idea...

31. I have to run from the room when those come on - or if I can
find the remote, change the channel. The commercials break my heart. I also had to flee whenever the commercials against animal abuse - with the Sarah McLaughlin song in the background - came on. Jesus I hate those commercials!

I hope they educate people, encourage them to adopt from shelters and be kind to animals, but they break my heart.
