Any Bukowski fans in the house?
Edited on Wed Feb-11-04 08:02 PM by dolo amber
I just re-read "The Most Beautiful Woman in Town"...I just LOVED him. What is out there these days that you would recommend as something even coming close to Mr. Chinaski? (And not Chuck Palahniuk, already read him.) :)

Thanks! :hi:

1. Nothing that I know of . . .
You could try "hunger" by Knut Hamsun but nothing beats a re-reading of "Post Office".

2. Well, actually
the only thing that beats that is a re-reading of "Ham on Rye" which is my fave. "Post Office" is a close second, though. ;)

8. I agree with you about "Ham on Rye"
It is a fabulous book. Never cared for much of the rest (with the exception of "Mermaid of Venice Beach"), I find the whole "I drank, I puked, I played the ponies" to be monotonous and formulaic

3. another fan w/ no reading suggestions, but...
i always enjoy re-watching "barfly" when i happen to catch it.

but there is no comparison to reading him. some of his stuff is an acquired taste, though.

the next closest thing, and you cant really compare the two because they really have such different voices, is w.s. burroughs. ymmv

4. Nothing compares, IMO.
Read his poetry collection titled Love is a Dog From Hell if you haven't already. WOW!

5. Love is a dog from hell
is all I've read. It was intriguing to say the least.

I'd read it again.

6. Post Office is his best novel ever
perhaps the ultimate American novel in general. Man, Bukowski really takes me back to "the day" when I gave a shit about that sort of thing. :)
