Looking to start a garden. Can anyone recommend a web site?
I live in NJ and I'd like to get some advise as to what grows best in my area, when to plant, how to care for etc. Looking to plant veggies and herbs mostly. Any good web sites out there that someone can recommend that could help this gardening newbie get started??

3. Park seed and Jungs
Two very trusted and proven suppliers of seeds for all types of quality veggies and herbs. NJ is sort of not southern nor Northern so I have taking that geographic fact into account offering these to sources.

Park is out of South Carolina:

Jungs is out of Wisconsin:

If you have no public library the interenet may be the only source easily accessed.

4. University extension programs
usually good source for more local and regional info. Here's a link I found for one at Rutgers http://www.rce.rutgers.edu/ Seeds or plants will list what USDA zone they grow best in. You can find your zone here http://www.usna.usda.gov/Hardzone/ushzmap.html. You may also want to do a soil test. You can purchase the kits at a nursery or hardware store. This will also let you know if you need add anything to your soil. Also, google and see if there is a local gardening club in your area. Ours has plant sales, which are great and much cheaper than retail. Also, if you go to a local nursery/plant store, there can be some very knowledgeable people that are usually more than willing to help out a newbie.

Good luck and enjoy your garden!
