98. Clintonville
which was a great neighborhood to grow up in.My dad lived in German Village, and now resides in Dublin.

Yeah, but I blame state officials for 2000 (along with the SCOTUS) the people TRIED to vote for Gore. I was assigned to a polling place in a minority neighborhood that day.The only other white person there was a cop who kept getting in the faces of the black voters (especially older women)and saying "what ya gonna do when your boy loses? Ya gonna CRY when your boy losses"? They tried to close the polling place over an hour early, but when we protested they changed their tactics and started telling people that they had come to the wrong place to vote-that they were actually assigned to another polling place across town (not enough time to get there for those who use public transportation, of course). So we called some local churches to send over their buses to take the people to the "right" polling place. As soon as we had loaded everyone on the buses and got them on their way the cops pulled the buses over, saying that they had to unload unless they could provide a "taxi license". :grr:

That was the incident that I witnessed, and I heard of many others that same day. I reported it to the press, but the only person who would write about it and the other criminal measures taken that day to deprive Gore of the Whitehouse was greg Palast of the BBC. He was the one and only reporter who corresponded with me and other party members here in town-even the local papers wouldn't touch the story. All accomplices, I say!

99. Oh. My. God.

I think my jaw just hit the floor reading that. Of course i'd heard similar stories at the time -- but to see it first hand must have been INFURIATING. I can't even imagine how frustrated, angry and upset you (and those voters!) must have been.

:grr: :nuke: :grr:

Good for you for being there though, and for trying to follow through with the media. We need six of you in every polling place!

I love Clintonville, by the way! We live in the Short North now, but i think if we were going to stay in Columbus and raise a family, Clintonville would be the place to be. :)

102. Yep, I couldn't quite wrap my head around what was happening at first
and I thought it might have been an isolated incident. Then that evening one of my former students called, sputtering in fury. He said that he had changed his registration from independent to Democrat eight months earlier. He had his new voter ID ready and went to vote where he had always voted before. When he got there the woman checking his info read back his name and address to him, he confirmed it, then she said "you can't vote today". He asked why, since all of his information was correct, and she repeated "you can't vote today"! Then she nodded at a cop who was standing near the door. The cop came over, grabbed him roughly by the arm, and pulled him out of the building. When they were outside the cop said "you won't be voting today, son, so don't bother coming back". He tried calling the Democratic party HQ but the line was busy until evening. That's when I knew for certain that this was an orchestrated campaign to steal the Whitehouse. Coming from the Midwest, I'd never seen anything like it before. Columbus was very Liberal in the 70's and 80's (I was born there in 1965). I had never even heard a white person use the "N" word before I moved to Florida for a job in '89. It certainly is different down here; far more corruption then up North (well, at least until Blackwell came along).

I really like the Short North. It feels a lot more like the city did decades ago. I used to work at an advertising firm there when I was attending CCAD, and still like to hit the Riley Gallery and Martini's when I come up for a visit. It wouldn't be a bad place to raise a family either, especially if you had one of those grand Victorians!(Which years ago sold for only $1 each...unrenovated, of course). ;-)

I start to think about all this stuff, and how different the world would be if 2000 had gone differently... and it just makes me so, so sad and upset. :(

Next time you're in Columbus, we'll have to get a drink at the Surly Girl -- it's at High and 4th Ave. Best (super lefty) bar in town! :D

49. We were an independent monarchy fror three-quarters of a century
We have an indigenous language (Hawaiian) as an official language alongside English.

There are thousands of plant and bird species found nowhere else on Earth.

Every climate zone except the distinctly Arctic is to be found here (the very tops of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa are subarctic).

A cold snap implies that overnight lows may dip below 70. :P

Surfing (more properly known as surfriding) was developed here. According to legend, the first surfer was an ancient Hawaiian who got caught in a wave and rode it to save his life.

We are the only state to grow coffee. Puerto Rico does, too, but it's a commonwealth. :P

I could go on and on...

And, in winter, it turns into a massive, slippery extension of your yard that you don't have to mow.

No tollbooths, 70mph speed limits, 24-hour White Castles, and the roads are wide, straight, and have plentiful shoulders, ditches, and medians. Plenty of beautiful scenery. And the state is chock-full of hot blonde ladies.

84. My State has a lot of natural beauty
the Ozarks, the Ouachitas (mountains)

the history of it (state since 1837), last outpost on the frontier before Indian Territory

Buffalo River National Scenic Park

Hot Springs National Park

Lots of hiking

Civil war battlefields

Regions that are distinctive to different areas: frontier, old south, northern, Mississippi delta, farming, forestry, industry, lots of different flavors in a small state... flatlands and mountains.

Rural and urban areas

New growth and wealth coming into the state

Lots of undeveloped land and beauty

I dunno if it is the greatest, or best, nor do I know if I shall live here forever, (or my version of mortal forever) but it is at least not the totally horrible place I thought it would be when I moved here.

and there are just too many reasons to post. But a few are that it's drop-dead gorgeous, we have no state income or sales tax, the state gives us money every single year from the oil royalties ($1,654 this year), marijuana is legal up to an ounce for personal use (or 25 plants), you can still get an abortion if you need one, we have no death penalty, there are fewer than 700,000 of us for a state 1/5 the size of the rest of the country, we have the "hottest," most popular governor in the country (even though she's a Republican, she's a populist, and she kicks ass), and FINALLY somebody's doing something about our corrupt Republican legislators. Two are sitting in the federal pen right now, one's been convicted and is awaiting sentencing, and another one is waiting to be tried, plus Ted Stevens and Don Young, among others, are under federal investigation, which makes us all real happy.

134. Venus flytraps!! Thanks for the reminder.
South Carolina does have some interesting plants and animals, as well as a lot of habitat diversity and beautiful scenery.
One of the state slogans: Smiling faces, beautiful places. That pretty much sums it up.

To be honest, North Carolina also has flytraps. But they are native only to the coastal plane of the Carolinas.

I wrote the first post right after reading a couple of articles about NCLB and other educational issues in SC.
