What everyday food do you REFUSE to eat
Don't find some obscure food like Sheep Balls that you know none of us would eat, but a common place everyday food that you just refuse to eat.

Me: PICKLES I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE PICKLES!!!

I always request my meals come without pickles even if the meal usually doesn't have pickles to begin with. And if they bring the plate out with a pickle I've been know to send the meal back because I don't want that nasty pickle juice all over my food.

30. Glad to see i'm not the only one.....
But i do love a nice, crisp Kosher dill. With a spoonfull of peanut butter! Ok OK OK,.,,,,,i am a weirdo. But i never denied it!

One other thing. I can take black olives on a veggie pizza. Just not too many. Damn, i'm strange. But then, i am an atheistic, liberal, uneducated but somewhat well read, overweight trucker with bad posture and a poor command of the English language.

28. I LOVE olives
Especially fresh Alfonso olives. Green olive pizza is fabulous; too bad you can't get it at most places in NY.

Anchovies are the REAL food obscenity. How could anybody eat them. They taste disgusting. And they're hairy. Yuck.

I don't like Miracle Whip, either. And whoever invented Pop Tarts probably spends most of their time at McDonald's.

...all of those ARE commonplace in Brazil:

Rabada - made of cow tail. Rubbery, full of grease and hard tissue, smells horrible.
Dobradinha - Made of... I don't know if it's cow stomach or intestine. One of those, for sure. Again, rubbery and smells foul.
Cow tongue - Weird texture. Yuck.
Mocotó - Pig feet. I kid you not.

And I'm not too crazy about potato chips or soda either. Most canned vegetables are disgusting, and a lot of them are almost as bad after being frozen. I've never found an artificial sweetner that didn't taste like poison. Instant coffee isn't potable. And why haven't more people noticed that McDonald's food, and fast food in general, is kind of funny-tasting?

Let's see. Canned plums are atrocious. I remember them from hot-lunch. Kids used to suck on them for a while and then lob them across the room. I don't like canned fruit cocktail. I don't like frozen hake. I won't eat pork because pigs are intelligent and deserve better. I don't like sweetened tea. I don't like vanilla custard pie.

I pretty much love almost all veggies, I can't stand fruit. I've been that way since I was a kid. It has something to do with having a deep-seated loathing, almost a phobia, of getting sticky things on my hands. It's hard to eat most fruit without getting STICKY. ewwww.

Probably why I don't like toddlers either. I don't mean to eat...never tried fricaseeing one. They're always so STICKY.

153. Ack! No, here's what you do:
Blanch the Brussels sprouts. You want 'em to stay nice 'n' green, because you've gotta cook 'em for a while to kill the bitterness. After blanching, cut the sprouts in half.

Heat a nice saute pan. Throw in some pancetta (mmmmm... pancetta).

Once some of the fat has been rendered out, and the pancetta is crispy, take the bacon out the pan and throw in the sprouts.

Cook them. Cook them a good, long time until they're nice and browned on the edges (especially the cut surface). Have somebody less sproutphobic than you taste one to make sure they're no longer bitter.

Add the pancetta back to the pan. Grind in some pepper, salt as well if the cured pork didn't salt it up enough already.

Then...

Toss in a wee bit of good balsamic vinegar. Not the Heinz "balsamic vinegar" you can get for $2, but real Balsamico de Modena (but I think you already knew that, SOteric). That's the key. The balsamic will neutralize most of the remaining bitterness, and round out your sprouts to be just about the finest veggie side you've ever had.

I think it was you who talked about balance between flavors. If this dish is made right, you will find perfect balance between bitter (sprouts), sweet, sour (balsamic), salt (bacon), and even umami (pancetta and balsamic).

It's like heaven on a plate, and you get to eat your vegetables, too!

157. Here's the no-bitter Brussels Sprout dish
Even people who hate Brussels Sprouts come back for seconds and thirds on these:

Peel the outer leaves off of fresh Brussels sprouts
Slice very thinly (I use food processor or mandoline, but plain old knife works too)
"Fluff" the shreds up to make a mound of Brussels sprout "hay"

Heat a saute pan or large skillet and add butter and olive oil in equal parts, not too much, just enough to lightly coat the sprouts. Add salt and freshly ground pepper to taste.

Saute for just a few minutes untill they turn bright green. Add a few drops of water and put a cover on the pan for about 30 seconds to lightly steam them.

Squeeze fresh lime juice over them and serve immediately.

SCRUMPTIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

160. Here's what you do for beets:
Peel them and slice them really thin. A mandoline or food processor helps.
Toss with salt, pepper, olive oil.
Roast them at 450 until tender (20 minutes or so).

In the meantime, toss some field greens with a balsamic vinegrette and spread the bread of your choice with a nice soft chevre. Pile the greens and the beets on the bread. Eat.

Alternatively, you could use sharp cheddar and horseradish for the sandwich instead of greens and chevre.

carnivores are smarter than veggie eaters... think about it -- how much brains does it take to sneak up on a pea pod?

I can tolerate:
Corn
Green Beans
Potatoes
Lettuce
Raw Celery
Raw Carrots
Spinach (in things, not by itself)
Sometimes peas but not often (also really only in things)

That about does it for me. I pretty much loathe all others.

I like meat, but I can't stomach the taste of a plain hotdog. Their passable wrapped in cornbread and pretty good buried in chili, but the classic "dog and a bun" just turns my stomach. I don't really know why either

Reading this thread makes me hungry...I like every other food listed here (even pickles, okra, and shellfish).

56. WHAT IN GODS NAME WOULD POSSESS ANYONE TO EAT SCRAPPLE???!!!
I'm born and bread PA Dutch farm gal here where Scrapple is an everyday mainstay in the diet. I use to adore eating scrapple until one day I helped butcher a pig and make scrapple.

Scrapple to me is taking what's compressed from the Trash compactor, slicely it up thinly, frying it in the frying pan and putting maple syrup on it.

What boggles the mind is all these Philly folks who think Scrapple is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Well sliced bread with the skin, hair snot, intestines, dead rat, bugs and anything else they accident put into the scrapple mix.

You wouldn't eat Scrapple if you knew what was in it.

125. Correction, cheese smells and tastes MUCH WORSE than vomit
I would understand Republicans winning every vote more than I can comprehend this planet's love for the slimy yellow crap.

Other than mild mozzarella on pizza loaded with toppings, I absolutely despise cheese of any description. Yet the only verified conspiracy is the global cheese conspiracy, since restaurants insist on contaminating virtually every dish with gruesome cheese, much more than they did 20 years ago.

RobinA, you're a genius, right up there with that cheese-hating politician from the 2000 commercials! That's a one-issue agenda I would embrace forever.

I like it much better than regular mayonnaise (all least the store-provided kind.) The latter tastes too bland, but Miracle Whip is just right for sandwiches, IMO.

vinaigrette dressing or anything else with a vinegary taste
liver

151. That's exactly my take on melons!
Especially canteloupe. That garbage smell is a huge turn-off. I do like watermelon, but it's quite different from canteloupe.

My other dislikes are tripe, shredded coconut (I like fresh) and anything maple or banana "flavored" -- real maple syrup is good, real bananas or banana bread are good, but adding the flavor rather than the real thing turns me off.

But, in general, my motto is "Food! My favorite!"

145. meat, poultry, olives, pickles
meat and poultry cuz I'm a pesco-vegetarian (I eat seafood). Olives cuz ... ewwwwwwwww. Can't even touch the tip of my tongue to an olive without recoiling. And pickles ... belong in the trash with their sour cousin, yucky saurkraut.

148. Fantastic, that's at least 3 cheese haters on DU!
An astute community, indeed.

I'm going to bookmark this thread for ammunition vs. my new, cheese loving girlfriend. She thinks despising cheese is a subhuman trait, and claims before meeting me she never heard of anyone who hated it.

155. Butter, butter substitutes, mayonnaise and gravy
There are some situations when I can eat this stuff.

a little butter on noodles/popcorn ok - butter on bread/toast - gag-worthy

a little mayonnaise in tuna/potato salad ok - mayonnaise on sandwich -disgusting - even spreading it on for my family makes me nauseous

Gravy - au jus ok, any other kind - blecchh

I know there's a pattern here - probably consistency.
