I've given up on atheism
I haven't started believing in God or anything, but I've come to the realization that atheists annoy me. As a group they are way too uptight and I can't help but wonder how I have anything in common with them aside from the fact that I don't believe in God. As such, I have decided that I am now officially a follower of the Church of the SubGenius, mainly because they have wicked holidays.

That is all.

2. Well, it's only some of them.
A vocal group, mind you, like any fundie.

At least some of them have started admitting, in a round about way, that they're believers in their own form :P

16. No, I'm just lazy.
I was lazy when I was still a Christian too. If you look at my profile, you will see one of my favorite activities is "sleeping."

4. prejudice = judging individuals by the group.
If we are "uptight" it is a reaction to the undeserved deference religious people insist their views at entitled.

13. Sorry, didn't know that.
It's hard for me to understand people's true meanings in person. It's almost impossible to do it remotely. Asperger's you know. :(

12. Wait... it's ok to be uptight because you think
religious people get deference, but it's not ok to judge individuals by the group?

15. I don't think we're uptight.
Just a little defensive. And it is a sense of required deference to religious people's views that does it. This view is held by many religious and nonreligious people. I am not saying it is because of the Christians or the Jews any more than I can say that "the Jews" control the media. SOME Jews are in the media and some Christians are touchy about disagreement with their beliefs. SOME nonreligious people also think it is wrong to question religious beliefs. I am pointing out that individuals think that way, not that any group of people does.

17. I think some are really, really uptight.
Some are a little. Some are not at all.

However, I don't know what you mean by 'deference', but I routinely hear that it is ok to be nasty and hateful to religious people, either because "they" started it, or because there are more of "them". This rubs me the wrong way.

23. It's not okay to be nasty or hateful.
If I did that, I would have no friends because almost everyone here is a believer to some degree. I think the beliefs themselves are entitled to no more deference than any other idea. I am not going to pretend I don't know what I know or what the logical import of that knowledge is. Nevertheless, most of life has nothing to do with religion and, therefore, I avoid thinking badly of people just because they were born into a culture of belief. In other words, I respect and often like the person even though I disagree with some of his/her opinions.
