Poll question: Best Asian food?
Edited on Wed Feb-11-04 12:15 PM by JCCyC
Disclaimers: I have never eaten Indian (except the occasional curry here and there) or Thai food.

Edit: Arab renamed to Middle Eastern

Totally agree that Vietnamese food ROCKS!
It's cold and rainy here and I'd give anything for a big bowl of Pho to warm up my tummy. :-)

15. yeah kimchi blows
but that's because my three Korean roommates have filled our fridge with it and it really stinks up the place. And I've never seen a jumbo jar of Kimchi that did NOT leak. Man that smelly red juice gets everywhere!

Bul Go Gi is good and I like Korean noodles.

btw are you Korean?

16. Is there an all-of-the-above option?
My parents raised me with exposure to all kinds of cuisine. They had a rule in ethnic restaurants: No ordering the grilled cheese or the chicken fingers unless we tried something off the regular menu first. (I can't remember ever ordering a kiddie-menu substitute later, either.)

My dad tells me I really impressed the waiter, when I was about 3 or 4, and was able to identify the tofu in the soup. (We were apparently at a restaurant that got a lot of "ooh, honey, look, they're from China!" tourists. It was a Japanese restaurant.)

26. I like all of them, but
the best Asian food I've ever eaten was made by the Malaysian and Indonesian students at the college where I last taught. Every month during the school year, the Int'l Studies Department would give one of the nationality groups among the foreign students money to put on a dinner, which would then be free to the first thirty people who signed up.

Amazingly, few American students ever took advantage of this, but the faculty and staff sure did. The Malaysian/Indonesian night always got its thirty people signed up within hours of the announcement.

Beef satay, corn fritters, nasi goreng... YUM!

27. I Love Them All
for the most part.

Real Chinese food can be great. I even love daikon and bitter melon. But they eat too many things that just creep me out -- intestines, feet, tendons, dried whole fish, shrimp, and jellyfish, etc. All the ligaments in a pork rib or a chicken breast. That blood tofu stuff.

Japanese is great, but sometimes goes a little too far in the strange raw sea creature department.

Same thing with Korean -- I like kimchi, bulgogi, Korean BBQ, and so forth. But Korean cuisine has a real taste for the bizarre by American standards. Hottest dish I ever tried was Korean sea cucumber that was passed around as being inedible.

Thai, Vietnamese, Malaysian, and Indonesian are all great. The lemon greass, coconut milk, bean threads, mulicolored curries -- never had a bad experience.

Inidan I love. They have some really authentic places in the DC area whose dishes virtually glow in the dark with spices. Not hot so much as intense.

And it's hard to go wrong with middle eastern, with the eggplant, lamb, chick pea and olive oil dishes.

I'm grateful they're all available. There's wonderful variety, at least in cities, if you go out of your way a little.

and slapped it on a plate with some hot sauce.

32. Them's fightin' words, boy!!
Thai food is EXCELLENT!

All Asian food, really, is excellent. Heck, pretty much all food all over the world is excellent. I bet even Inuit raw seal with congealed seal blood marinade is actually pretty tasty.

Everything but green peppers. Those suck.
