I don't see "Hide GD:Primary" or "Hide Israel/Palestine" or "Hide the Gun Dungeon" or "Hide Meeting Room" (which is just The Lounge-light). And I certainly see more people posting how they never-ever-ever wanta go in GD:Primary again ever.

I personally would be upset if they were doing this to any forum 'cause I go in all of them from time-to-time. But I love the Lounge. This is home for a lot of us here and it makes me feel just a little less welcome than I did before. :-(

As DU becomes more and more mainstream, we run the risk of outsiders, who see some of these Lounge thread titles (on the "Latest Discussion Threads" page), thinking we're all about "bitches, blunts and 40s."

This site is about to undergo enormous growth, unless it's panned by the mainstream media as insipid and juvenile.

30. Just to clarify

The "Hide Lounge" function is an option that you will be able to set in your profile. The option to hide the Lounge will be "off" by default (ie. Lounge threads will not be hidden by default), so newbies will still see the Lounge when they come to DU, as will unregistered members who just browse the forums. Lounge threads will only be hidden on the Latest page by DUers who choose to set the option in their profiles.

The point of the upgrade is to improve DUers' personal experience by allowing registered members to customize what they can see on the Latest page. We're starting with the Lounge because a lot of people - including quite a few Lounge folks - have requested the option. However, it's certainly possible that we will extend the function to other forums in the future. Ideally, if the software can handle it, DU could be set up so that DUers could customize exactly what appears on the Latest page - which would mean all Lounge all the time if you so desired. That's a little way off though.

So to reiterate - this isn't an attempt to "ghettoize" the Lounge by any means, it's merely a continuation of what we started with the "Hide Threads" function by providing greater customization choices for registered members.
