7. That happened to a friend of mine

We were outside playing, and her drunken step dad called to her to come home. We were about the same age as the girl in the story. A few minutes later I saw her, looking scared to death in the driver's seat, weaving down the road. She turned the corner and we heard a crash; she'd gone right into a neighbor's fence. No one was serous hurt, thank God. But, I'll never forget the look on her face, and the sense of dread I felt as I watched her drive by, her eyes peering over her hands clutching the steering wheel. She told us later he just wanted to get a pack of cigarettes.

What is really bad was that it was a regular thing. Her mother made her go to the bars with her alcoholic father so he wouldn't cheat. she usually ended up driving home starting at about age 8.
