5. There is an escalation
It seems that the fairer sex is finding new ways to test the boundaries. I noted this first on MTV where young lesbians openly displayed affection in the late 90's. The significance I deemed was to titillate male viewers.

But since the Madonna-Brittany Kiss and follow up video not to mention very explicit female sexuality by other music artists (less so in other media) something is going on.

Janet's stunt may have been over the top top dropping, but it appears part of that trend. I would like to say it's a new form of liberation but feel as always that the push is more symptomatic of what is wrong rather than symbolic of new frontiers.

What I fear is the influence of porn on the main stream and the loss the attempt to pull and audience with music swapping and slumping music sales.

6. Yep...I agree
Also....You know, I can't think of any other time in the past 100 years when popular music has been stuck in such a rut. The powers that be have watered the art of playing down so much that there's really not anywhere else to go but pull in a new "fad".

I mean, when was the last popular (I repeat...Popular) song that had a decent Guitar, Sax, Trumpet, Piano or whatever solo. Modern day tunes just drone on and on and on like lost ships of fools with nowhere to go.....

11. I think Madonna has been a huge influence on the escalation
Granted, women have been pushing the boundaries of sexuality for a long time...flappers in the 20's, Mae West, Marilyn Monroe, etc. But the music + female sexuality = huge profit craze in my opinion was hugely impacted by Madonna's global success.

Remember how 'Like A Virgin' caused such a stir when it first came out? Then there was her Sex book and her Erotica album. She made that B-movie that included soft S&M scenes and girls all over the world idolized her...including me oddly enough. She always seemed to take charge of her sexuality and while I was growing up, I liked the perception of a strong, sexual, unapologetic woman.

But as I got older, I began to realize it was nothing more than marketing. To be a strong sexual unapologetic woman is one thing, to make yourself out to be one just for money is...well...sad and insulting to the beauty of female sexuality. But shock sells and sex definately sells so if you combine the two, shock and sex, then it's a winning combo I guess. Therefore it will continue to get more and more shocking because that's what this society lusts for.
