Most Disappointing Sequel? (Besides Chimpy)
What film sequel ruined it for you? When I think of the inability of Hollywood to make satisfying sequels to films you cherish, I can't ever decide if the idea of trying to push a fine film into a franchise is just inherently dumb, or if the crews just can't find the same voice/tone/pace the second or third time around. At any rate, we have candidates that range from

Godfather 3 (which, though not in the same league as 1/2, isn't a complete disaster, Sofia's acting or not--it's more like a flat soda).

Alien 3 was a huge letdown after the one-two punch of Alien/Aliens, but again, not off-the-chart horrible.

Escape From L.A. was idiotic, but go back and watch Escape From NY again and you might agree with me that it was hardly Citizen Kane itself.

I've made my feelings about Ewoks abundantly clear in other threads.

So I'm undecided. You?

5. Agreed, although I didn't see No. 3
No. 2 was so bad, I rented it on pay-per-view and then spent most of the second half bitching about it in the lounge.

3. Alien 3 shoulda used Fincher's assembly cut
The studio cut/edit is ridiculously bad, if you get a chance to see the long cut, see it, the movie makes sense, and flows the way it's supposed to.

Most great movies get shortchanged because fat-assed studio execs and dumbass producers have too much of a say.

8. Where/how would one see that?
Cuz I love Fincher. I even sat thru all of Panic Room. I've always assumed there was a method to the madness of Alien 3 somewhere, but the bottomliners got a hold of it and destroyed it. Still, dude, you don't fucking kill Newt! No! She suffered thru all of Aliens just to have the kid die before the credits even roll? Plus, her sleeper was intact in the escape pod, so how did the facehugger get in there? Maybe that's explained in the edit?

9. You're gonna hate this answer
It's in the Alien Quadrilogy 9 DVD set.

Borrow it from a buddy or see if someone can burn you one. Not that I would condone such an action.

4. You're more charitable about Godfather III than I am.
This was an entirely pointless remake, IMO.

12. I go back and forth there
I think Michael was such a rich character that you could script an amazing coda to his story, but G3 wasn't it. And the reliance on what I've always called Coach/Woody Syndrome (when Coach died on Cheers they brought in Woody, who wasn't Coach's age, etc, but fit the bill for the dim guy at the bar) that resulted in Andy Garcia's "Sonny Jr." character was so forced, particularly Michael's letting him quickly ascend to his inner circle. The final shot of a decrepit, insane Michael falling over dead from old age was a great shot, though. Just nothing else.

20. Unique in its suckingdom
Highlander II is the only sequel that was actually able to ruin the movie it was a sequel to.

doesn't pretty much EVERYONE agree that the sequel was one of the lamest things ever committed to celluloid?

18. I didn't think it was THAT bad
Edited on Tue Feb-10-04 03:44 PM by Loonman
Sure the scriptwriting, directing and editing was terrible. The casting was bad......well, maybe you're right.

Actually I think they trashed the franchise on purpose.

21. Matrix. Second one was bad, third one was horrible.
If the original film hadn't been so good, the third one would have even ruined that movie for me. The third was supposed to tie things up, explain things, etc. Not only did it do neither, it made the whole thing even more confusing. I was pissed
