Why is there no East Virginia?
I demand that this be rectified. Until The Virginias one day unite we must refer to them as East Virginia and West Virginia. Maybe the Dakotas could put away their long standing emnity, and the Carolinas as well!

4. But, but, but...
Edited on Tue Feb-10-04 11:35 AM by DarkPhenyx
...we HATE the South Carolinians. :)

Seriously though...part of the reason that West Virginia is called that is becasue one of the slogans for the seperatist movement was "West Virginia not Western Virginia." At least that's what I learned watching "Honey in the Rock" many, many moons ago. As the actual seperation was partially rooted in the Civil War, and Virginia never really "mutually agreed" to the division, I am guessing they chose to not change their name.

You did want a serious response to this didn't you?

Then you'd have to have a North Virginia and South Virginia, as well.

9. It stops by changoing the name of the state now known as Virginia to...
East Virginia. That way it will be settled. East and West Germany did not lead to North and South Germany. North and South Korea did not lead to East and West Korea. There is no reason to fear an emergence of North and South Virginia.

7. There's an old urban legend (might be true)
Where someone from West Virginia was pulled over by a cop, and the cop thought a driver license from "West Virigina" was a hoax.

But back to your topic...I don't know why the state boundaries are so static. I think the Dakotas should be combined, California should be split into 2 or 3 states, combine some of those dinky NE states...

14. Part of it is Congressional Representation.
As each state is given two Senators combining states would dilute the power of those states being combined.

As far as I'm concerned I think combining representation is a great idea. I'll go into it at length if anyone is really interested in reading my ramblings.

28. Why not? Because the Constitution says
New states may be admitted by the Congress into this union; but no new states shall be formed or erected within the jurisdiction of any other state; nor any state be formed by the junction of two or more states, or parts of states, without the consent of the legislatures of the states concerned as well as of the Congress.

And why would any state legislature want to destroy itself? Why would a Senator want to eliminate his or her job?

43. But I like dinky NE states...
They're quick to drive through, so it feels like you are making progress when you're on long car trips. Besides, it's fun being able to drive 10 miles in almost any direction to cross the state border, in order to take advantage of favorable laws in the surrounding states.

The state split up during the civil war, with "West Virginia" siding with the union, and "Virginia" siding with the confederacy.

There is a Chicago, a North Chicago, a West Chicago, an East Chicago......even a Chicago Heights.............

But there is no South Chicago.

Why? For the grace of god, could somebody please explain why?

22. East Chicago, is in Indiana......
So we have an East, but not a South, Chicago. North Chicago is up near Waukegan, and West Chicago is out near Aurora.

At one time, there was a South Chicago Heights, but they have since changed their name to Ford Heights.

It's all very perplexing.

33. You must not confuse the Southside, with fictitious "South Chicago".
There actually is a city, 30 miles north of Chicago called "North Chicago", which is not to be confused with the Northside of Chicago.

The Southside is anyplace in the city limits, south of the Loop or south of the south branch of the Chicago River, more or less. There is a Southeastside, Southside, Westside, Northwestside and Northside. But no Eastside, although there is an area near Navy Pier that people are calling the "New East Side". But that's just developer mumbo-jumbo.

But there is no city or town called, South Chicago. There are towns called North Chicago, West Chicago and East Chicago however.

Doncha just love geography?

21. Western Virginia extends further west than West Virginia
Look on a map. So by your logic the division should not be West vs. East Virginia, but Northwest Virginia vs. Southwest, Southeast, Central, and Northeast Virginia.

Edited on Tue Feb-10-04 02:16 PM by cosmicdot
East Virginia and West Virginia may not have made the distinction clear

an example of how geography can affect politics, government, socio-economic differences, etc.

I'm a born and bred Virginian.

West Virginia just had had enough of the Piedmont and Tidewater fat cats ...

Actually, I wrote a term paper on the geopolitcs of the split-up for one of my college courses.

There's a street in Houston called "East Mount Houston". Not only is there no "West Mount Houston", there's no "Mount Houston" at all.

The Houston area is FLAT, FLAT, FLAT.

40. East Virginia
Here you go:
http://www.ibiblio.org/jimmy/folkden/East.html

This love song was also passed around by word of mouth, throughout the Appalachain Mountains for many years.I learned it at the Old Town School of Folk Music.
This recording was made in the late 50's at my home, 57 East Division Street, in Chicago. I used a Pentron reel to reel tape recorder running at 7 1/2 IPS.

East Virginia

I was born and raised in East Virginia
North Carolina I did roam
And there I met the fairest maiden
Her name and age I do not know
Her hair it was of a light brown color
Her cheeks they were of a rosy red
And on her breasts she wore white lilies
Where I long to lay my head

I'd rather be in some dark 'holler'
Where the sun don't never shine
Than to see he wed another
And to know that she's never be mine

I was born and raised in East Virginia
North Carolina I did roam
And there I met the fairest maiden
Her name and age I do not know

We have South Los Angeles (formally South-Central), West LA, East LA but no North LA (which would be The Valley).

Also there's Hollywood, North Hollywood and West Hollywood but no East or South Hollywood.

Honestly when I moved here 10 years ago I was amazed at how absolutely no attention is paid in the Richmond area to anything but Charlottesville and NoVa. Hampton Roads (1 + hour away) might as well be on Mars for all they care, trust me they feel the same way. Roanoke isn't even on their map.
