22. That dad is a case...
he's so anal retentive it's hillarious! The gal who is playing Steve's sister is great with all the death obsession stuff.

If this is the one where both families meet, it's gonna be chaos! I can't wait! Especially the fart jokes!

5. Yeah....guilty as charged....
Last night's episode was great. Between Steve talking to Randi's father about them not having sex, and the guy playing Steve's father talking about the time he got drunk and peed all over his mother in law in bed, I was dying. Such a train wreck of a show.

8. Pretty funny, "Joe Schmoe" funny
I love watching people get scammed on TV.

The only thing better than that is those "wild videos" shows with people getting railed while doing stupid stuff.

10. I am LOVING this show.
I'm just hoping things don't get too emotional towards the end. There seem to be lots of tears in the previews of upcoming events. Steve is great. I love the way they use his laugh to punctuate some scenes, especially right before a commercial break.

I guess the premise is that big fat people aren't entitled to love.

14. No, that's not really the premise at all.

The emphasis is on how uptight the woman and her family are and what a shock it is for them to encounter someone so different from themselves. They could have hired a thin actor to do what this "big, fat obnoxious" guy is doing but part of the fun is seeing the reactions of people who think the woman involved in the prank has a particular "type". The "fat, obnoxious" guy is great and very likeable. I'm sure he wouldn't have trouble finding love in the real world but the point of this show is not for anyone to find love. It is to pull one over on the "brides" family and friends.

15. Well, I think it exposes the "beautiful people" as the prigs they are
I think it's great that Steve symbolically stomps on the rose bushes of the yuppie scum.

Die yuppies, die die die die!!!!!!!!!

12. I don't watch any reality shows...
I figure at the very least it is an attempt by TV producers and TV conglomerates to cut out the writers because they don't want to have to deal with the writers union.

Even if it weren't for that, they are insipid and banal. I put reality TV in the same category as daytime talk shows and soaps. None of them are intelligent enough for me to bother wasting time on.

17. Isn't that annoying.
It's not as though anyone gets lured to these reality show threads under false pretenses. It's right there in the subject line what the thread is about. If someone isn't a fan of reality TV or of a particular reality show then there are plenty other threads to choose from.

18. Actually...
My comment was about this show in effect. All of them are debasing and puerile.

Some people responded that they found this one particularly sad because they are basically saying that fat people are either stupid and lazy or that they are undeserving of the love of an attractive person.

Each of the reality shows revolves around this basic concept. Lets humiliate people on national television because we know many people will do damn near anything for 5 minutes of fame or the promise of fortune.

If people continue to watch these shows, the networks will keep churning them out. When I heard about the "Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire?" way back when, I figured they had hit rock bottom on taste. I guess I was wrong. The longer this phenomena is supported with high ratings and big bucks, they are going to continue to sink to new lows of indecency and bad taste.

God forbid that someone spend some time and money making something of quality. Instead we continue to lower our expectations as a society by patronizing such drivel.

19. I don't know why anyone would come away from this show...
Edited on Tue Feb-10-04 12:12 PM by skypilot
...with the message that fat people are stupid and lazy and undeserving of love. If anything the show hilights how uptight and superficial some "thin and attractive" people are. The "fat, obnoxious" guy is the most likeable person on the show.

I have to wonder whether the people who lob that criticism at the show have actually seen it.

20. Once again this goes back to the whole genre
The entire genre is humiliating and degrading. The point of many of these shows to to make someone look foolish for the amusement of others. They are dehumanizing and sensationalistic.

If TV studios and producers could think of a way to make a show for no money that showed people eating poop, they would get it on the air. People keep watching these shows so they keep making them. It seems the more demoralizing and disgusting the show is, the more people watch it.

This is just an extension of the Jerry Springer type spectacle that parades around the lowest common denominator of humanity around for profit. Lesbian Nazi KKK babies and the Black Panthers that love them, next on NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX, UPN, Bravo, E!, MTV, VH1!, etc.

Do we really want to lower expectations for society that far? t the very least, it is confirming to the rest of the world how much the US fits the Ugly American stereotype.

I don't mean to be pissy or anything but the things you say in your post seem to be the standard response to reality shows. Some shows ("reality" and otherwise) do fit your description but I think that nowadays people simply hear the words "reality show" and come to certain conclusions: "lowest common denominator of humanity", "lower expectations for society", etc. Some of the shows on TV do fit that bill--and not just the reality shows or the Jerry Springer-types shows. I am quite capable of choosing which ones I think stoop too low. I don't think that "My Big, Fat Obnoxious Fiance" is one of them--at least not so far. To me, it is nothing but an extended version of "Candid Camera" where a prank is being played on someone and their reactions recorded. As far a confirming to the rest of the world the ugly American stereotype, I have to say that my friends who have been to Europe report back that there is a lot of really horrible dreck on European television also. REALLY horrible dreck. Ask anyone who's been to Italy (especially) to describe what's on TV there. America has not cornered the market on bad television.

13. The show is a riot
I like the way Randi is loosening up. She was so tight-assed at the beginning, but last night she thought it was a great idea to swipe that vase and wrap it up for her mom. Speaking of which, talk about a high-maintenance woman. . . didja see all that makeup?
