split records are ones where one band does one side and another band does another (or if they're on CDs as well, one band does the first few tracks and another band does the next one). they were nonexistant until the 80's and weren't common until modern times and ironically, CDs took over. So if you own any, even if it's a CD version, you're fairly underground.
