Then, I found out why it SOUNDS familiar:

Just click on the "Printer friendly" tab on the top left of the thread. It will take away avatars and sigs, but it will tell you who said what.

Agree in principle, but what happens if you want to apologize to them or you have a change of heart?

I really hate combatants on the Internet. But it does get intense AND I have been very pugnacious at times. Sometimes you say something you regret.

If you try to openly apologize, you'll find that doesn't work. You'll be sitting in the corner in a "TIME OUT" forever.

The administrators and moderators have their hands full here. We're all just shaping a medium that never existed before. Believe me, when I was on USE.net and chat rooms in the 1990s, it was just awful.

Anyway, welcome to the DU, MarkInLA, male type guy from Los Angeles, I guess. I don't know you because you must not come to the DU very often. How's the sprawl affected you? How about the smog? How far do you drive (or walk? bike? every day...). My daughter graduated from Lee College on Mulholland Drive, which is a very small school.

I used to go to UCLA in Westwood. My grandmother, aunt and uncle lived there. Only my uncle remains -- my aunt moved to Maui and then to the San Francisco area. I finished college at the University of Miami, so if you're a sports fan, I'm a HURRICANE-BRUIN (which has a joke in it because it could also be spelled HURRICANE-BREWIN').

Decided this was just like a large Internet debating society and the DU Lounge was an ongoing party where you chat with people and maybe you never see them again because they drift off. Or you find someone who writes well or posts pictures, or you share something private with them.

You also may encounter people you don't like BECAUSE of what they SAID and you tell them so. Others take sides and join in the fray. People say it's like a trainwreck -- but it's more like a verbal fistfight.

The DU feature is like "Strangers On A Train" -- like eating peanuts or chips ("Bet you can't eat one...") I really miss being here for companionship or information.

The web journal feature is also valuable to me.
