"We have to show these men and women freedom by enslaving them, and...
...show them courage by frightening them". --Chuck Pahlaniuk, in Fight Club.

I'm rediscovering this monumental story.

Anyone care to discuss this quote, or anything else by Pahlaniuk?

1. movie or book?
Watched for the first time last fall, then read the book.
Which are you rediscovering?

2. Both.
Both are great. Fight Club is as significant to men as, say, "The Bell Jar" or "The Beauty Myth" are to women.

Or at least it should be.

3. Which ending do you prefer?
IMO- I like the movie ending better. It wraps it up more for me.

4. Yes, me too.
Have you read "Diary" yet? Rather similar paths in the ending. It seems to be a current theme with him; redemption through death.

5. I'd wondered about his other works
I have a huge reading stack left over from XMas, and I need to finish that first. Is "Diary" worth it? Is it an earlier or later work of his?

8. "Diary" is the most recent
Edited on Mon Feb-09-04 10:24 PM by CanuckAmok
So far, I've read Fight Club, Lullabye (which I didn't enjoy), Choke (which I enjoyed, even though it was obviously written with Fight Club's success in mind--it's rather derivitive of F.C.), and I just picked up "Survivor" today.

on edit: I just finished "Diary". A better read than Choke or Lullabye, IMO.

14. Hey now!
You don't have to be a man to find Fight Club very significant. I related to a lot of it, actually -- it's as much about dehumanization as emasculation.

I liked the movie ending, but I think I liked the book ending better.

15. Mmmm...I guess I meant that...
...it addresses may of the issues of men and their changine (non?) role in modern society. No more hunting, gatering, or even breeding, required. I just found Palaniuk's take on mens' lives refreshingly revealing, without being too academic.
