NYC DUers: Is anyone allowed to get close to Ground Zero?
I'll be in town for the RNC, and I'd be interested in getting there early to finally see it for myself. I never saw the WTC up close, and I feel that I need to see the enormity of it.

1. Yes
They have built a viewing area of it. You can also walk around it. It has become a maor tourist spot, but it is also very someber and you will see people crying.

4. Hell, I would probably cry. (I haven't cried about it, yet.)
It would most likely set me over the edge, because I can't get it out of my mind that it should have been thwarted.

They keep talking about "intelligence failures". What about the NORAD failure to shoot the fucking planes down!

5. It's too sad
How in the world would NORAD know those guys were going to hijack planes and fly them into buildings?! But then again, we were attacked at least three times before that in the 1990's so I guess they should have been on the lookout. Especially given that those other attacks were by muslim terrorists as well.

6. Read a 9/11 timeline.
They had more than enough time to scramble those planes. Even within the time discrepancies of the various reports.

2. Yeah, you can get right to it now
Edited on Mon Feb-09-04 10:16 PM by Rabrrrrrr
It's fenced in, but the the fence is around the inside perimeter, and it's see through, and there are some viewing platforms, and a set of memorial plaques with the names of the dead on them...

No problem at all to get there.

Though if you're here during the RNC, they might have it cordoned off all the time so that the repukes can get down there and have their pictures taken with them looking "pensive" and "angered" and "sad" so they can look like f-ing heroes even though, for the most part, none of 'em really give a damn.

7. Exactly, it's hard to really capture
the enormity of it because all that's left is a big hole in the ground.

Seeing it shortly after 9/11 was pretty mind blowing though, however my lungs haven't been the same since.
