we got a Sony wVega 18 months ago and it's starting to show color bands at the top

"thingy" that paints the picture on the screen for you.

Are you actually seeing colors, or is it more like tv snow? Something like that on top is the closed captioning data.

3. yes LCD and that's what I was afraid of
I think it's gonna be a spendy fix and I'm wondering if it's worth it......

get a new tv for cheaper.

Almost forgot, did this just happen? Check around the TV and look for vents. If that light board overheats you'll see the same thing. Unblock the vents, clean them, whatever to unblock. See if that helps. Overheating could do the same thing with the color bands.

5. good idea, but Sonyis having a lot of trouble with Optical Blocks
luckily those parts are still under warranty but it's 70 miles one way to the repair shop and his labor is gonna run me $225
