Silversun Pickups--A new band that I actually like!
This decade has more or less past me by in terms of new mainstream rock bands. I think it's been years since I bought a CD of a rock band that originated in the 2000s. However, a few months ago a new band caught my ear.

They are called Silversun Pickups and I first heard their single "Lazy Eye" on the radio and I thought, "Hey, they sort of sound like the Smashing Pumpkins." Now, keep in mind that my all time favorite band ever is the Smashing Pumpkins and I will live and die with all their albums, especially Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie.

Then, on an airplane flight last month, I was listening to the XM radio and I heard another Silverspun Pickups song, "Melatonin." I liked it even more than "Lazy Eye." So, I went out on a limb and decided to buy their CD yesterday. And I must say I am very impressed.

That they are heavily, heavily influenced by the Pumpkins is simply undeniable. The lead singer does sound very much like a laryngetic Billy Corgan. However, that is not to say they are a Pumpkins copycat, either. Their sound features more of a distorted guitar feel to it, and I would also throw in Our Lady Peace and Radiohead (which I both like) as also having a similar sound to it.

The Pumpkins still have a lot stronger lyrics and a lot more range than the Pickups. I'm still comfortable in saying the Pumpkins are the better band of the two. But all in all, the Pickups are a very impressive band and I will most definetly buy their next album.

I'm just glad to know that there is still some decent new rock music out there. I was really worried that the genre was just about dead.
