DUers with whom you have, or have had, fundamental disagreements
on policy, strategy or both, but who still get your respect?

A post from The Magistrate concerning his friendship with absynthe made me think that maybe it's a good moment to offer props to those with whom we love to fight. Most of mine but not all (and the list is necessarily incomplete) come from the Green/Dem and Left/Center flamewars - dsc, w4rma, nsma (acronym nation?), The Magistrate himself, arwalden, more...

1. I can disagree with almost anyone, and maintain respect
even if I vehemently hold that their position is nonsense. Where I lose respect for people is when they:

a) stop respecting me for my opinions
b) try to enforce their opinions on me

Those two instances are where I draw the line.

2. I can disagree with people here and still appreciate them
I don't involve myself in many flame wars though. I enjoy honest discussion and disagreement. When I can't respect the different opinion is when it doesn't respect others. Anti choice sealots. Those who support discrimationatory policies. Those who don't support policies to end discrimination. Mostly social type causes.

3. Sometimes our emotions flare when we discuss things we are passionate

about.

Since your passion is what attracted me in the first place, why on earth would I no longer love and respect you when you demonstrate it?

There are some people I don't share any common ground with. If they disrespect me, so be it. I can't win them all.

There are some that I share a common bond with but when push comes to shove..I'm gonna take the stand I take and either risk the relationship or trust that it's strong enough to move through it.

If I've lost the respect of anyone they are free to tell me so. If I can earn it back or clean it up, and I see that that is needed or wanted I will. If I am only as valuable to another person as the last time I high fived them for a thought...I don't know that I will bother.

Hugs Buddy.

on edit: Besides..posting a pic of your ass on the internet in REAL TIME just because I asked you to means so much more to me than our fundamental disagreements.

when I wouldn't hold you a dear friend and ally, Teena.

Truly said.

edit to your edit: the passion of friendship - and a glass or four too much wine - work wonders. (insert nonexistent naked smilie here)

And I could've handled them better, but I have a hard time replying respectfully to people whose sole purpose in life seems to be to needle others into getting pissed.

5. I think I must say...
I respect the persons and viewpoints of everyone here. I may not always agree, but I do like to try and understand where they may be coming from.

This site does make for some very interesting debates with some very smart folks.

7. I dunno there've been some who I've easily been able to forgive....
....others not so easily...I guess for me it depends on the situation....depends on how pissy I was made by the comments in question!!

8. There are many
I may disagree with what they say but they are thoughtful and strong in their beliefs and it always comes from a reason. I can't hate someone for their beliefs, but those who respect me I shall always respect

11. I just want to say I respect anyone that voices their opinion
Aslong as it's not something idiotic like "kill all <random ethnicity>" etc..

But if you have a wellfounded argument against my opinion I respect it and you

Edited on Mon Feb-09-04 05:40 PM by pmbryant
Disappointed I didn't make the cut on yours.

No worries! Perhaps it's just because we've agreed too much lately. :-)

Or because I just don't post all that much.

14. Yep
I've disagreed with many here, but a few always seem to pop up with me, over and over. I think it is because I and those others feel passionately about the same subjects, we are just on different sides of those issues. I often find myself thinking "heh, so and so, again" whenever I'm in the middle of a heated discussion. But it usually stays pretty respectful. I think it would get boring for me if they left.
