Update on my neighbor's meowing cat
This is a follow up to this thread. ---> http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x7400237

I've decided to help the little guy, but first I have to make sure that my neighbor's have moved or that they won't lay claim to him. I just went to their door and rang the door bell, but no one answered. I will set out some food for him now, though. If I can't get a hold of my neighbors or if they don't claim him, I will take care of him until I can find him a good home. That may take a little doing as he is not your stereotypically cute cat. His left ear sticks out to the side all the time and he doesn't appear to be able to move it. I don't know if it's from a birth defect or from a scrap he's gotten into. I think it adds character to him, but I know a lot of people won't see it that way. Anyway, I'm off to the store to buy some cat food.

7. Is toilet training cats a good or bad idea??
I don't have a cat so I honestly don't know the answer to my odd question, but Droopy, I know your lack of space for a litter box was/is an issue and I found this online: http://www.karawynn.net/mishacat/toilet.html

Is this a legitimate option or is it worse than breastfeeding at the Olive Garden?

8. I think that was just an extraordinary cat
Besides, I don't plan on having him long enough to worry about that sort of thing. I think I can deal with a litter box in my bedroom long enough to find the little critter a good home.

17. Yes. Yes. We all tell ourselves that.
Then they steal our hearts. Sounds like you are already over halfway there. And good for you. Caring about that poor abandoned creature that probably feels so alone and confused and scared right now. It's so sad they left him behind.

11. Is it possible they didn't MEAN to leave him behind?
If he is an outdoor kitty, is it possible he ran off while they were moving and they just couldn't wait for him to come home? Do you have any way to find out where they moved to so you can ask if they are missing a cat?

I just can't stomach anyone that would voluntarily leave a pet behind, but I also hate the thought of someone having LOST a cat and being forced to move before they got it back...

Whatever the case, good on you, Droopy, for helping that kitty!

12. I remember them saying that they were only taking one cat with them
I was talking about the cats to them shortly after I moved here last summer. That's how I know the one they probably have abandoned is a boy. They were indoor/outdoor cats at the time. They would let them out to roam as they pleased and then take them back in when they wanted in. When it started getting really cold here, about a month ago, I know they took the female in. I saw one of my neighbors as he was leaving trying to block her from getting outside. For the last couple of weeks I've seen the male cat frequently, but I haven't seen my neighbors at all. And then there was the meowing earlier this morning. I've never heard either one of those cats do that. But to answer your question, there is no way of knowing where my neighbors have moved if indeed they have. We were just casual aquaintences.

13. They suck.
I'm sorry, you don't just abandon an animal. I know sometimes people can't avoid having to surrender a pet, but you don't just move away and LEAVE that animal behind. Poor kitty.

It is probably better not to know where they went, I guess. I'd be sorely tempted to go over to the new place and smack snot outta them.

Assholes.

18. Haha. Update on the update
I heard the little guy out there meowing again even though I had set out some food for him. I opened the door and then stepped away back into the apartment. He stepped half way into the door and looked around and sniffed a little while keeping a close eye on me. While we were looking at each other I stepped back with the thought that I might be less threatening and he would come in. But he took my movement as a threat and ran away. We'll see how long we have to play this game. :)

23. Ear may be damaged from mites
If the cat lets you handle him safely, some ear mite drops may help. If damage is old, it won't always get looking better, but the cat will be more comfortable & healthier if the mites get taken care of.

My daughter got a shelter cat who had ears damaged from mites. Not the prettiest cat, but so much personality and such a loyal friend. It almost killed us when he died at a ripe old age.

Maybe you can get some help from a local rescue. A listing on Petfinder.com, etc.

Screw them for leaving him behind, but bless you for helping him out.

33. That's more or less how I got my momma cat
The people who lived in the apartment before me abandoned her, I put food out for her on my porch so she could eat. I guess one night it was just too cold and she was scratching at my window wanting in, she came in cold, hungry, and very pregnant. We've been together for seventeen years now, i hope you find this cat a good home if you can't keep him, but they make wonderful companions.
