Aren't eight Vicodin EX (over the course of a day, not all at once), plus a Lunesta supposed
to make you TIRED?

Help you get to SLEEP?

I'm seeing some serious truth-in-advertising violations, right here.

9. It's OK, KW; this is the third night in a row, and generally after three nights
I get a break.

I probably should not have worked today, since my body told me very clearly not to, but I did anyway.

7. No, I go three weeks on and a week off with the Vikes, specifically to deal with
the tolerance buildup.

It's just that some days / nights, the pain burns through EVERTHING.

But what the hell, it ain't heart disease, and it ain't cancer, so I shouldn't complain.

17. they can cause insomnia, as well.
what is the pain from, if i might ask...?

i have ankylosing spondylitis, and i take methadone for pain- 50-70mgs per day, in the form of 10mg. tablets.

i also take vicoprofen for migraine headaches associated with the AS.

i have a prescription for ambien to deal with the insomnia, but they're pretty pricey...so i've found that it's a lot easier just to take a little extra methadone and a couple of flexerils(muscle relaxers)- knocks me out. btw- i don't drink any alcohol due to the meds, and haven't for almost 8 years now.

35. I notice a kind of kick when I take Vicodin...
I have neuritis that tends to pop up in the wintertime. When I take Vicodin, I notice that they calm me down/make me sleepy and pep me up at the same time. Weird combination.

30. Redstone....it's possible to build up enough tolerance
three weeks on and one week off (depending on how much you take, and how long you've been taking it).

It's absolutely possible.

Your body spends that week off going through withdrawals, but that doesn't re-set, if you will, your tolerance level.

I've been taking a narcotic (Fioricet Codeine) for migraines for years.

When I had my wisdom teeth removed, I was prescribed Vicodin and I ate them like Skittles to achieve basic pain relief.

I'm not sure why you're taking Vicodin, but if the prescribed amount is not working and you've achieved tolerance, you need to discuss this with your physician to adjust your pain regimen.

33. I'm the same way
when I got home from having a c-section I had to stop taking them and just deal with the pain because I couldn't function with the vicki's. Though the morphine at the hospital was a ton of fun  I'm small too, so my tolerance level is very low.

take the stuff four times a day, three weeks out of each month (and a few for emergencies like today).

Shine, sweets, how've you been? You were going through a bit of a rough patch a while ago, if I remember right, and I hope that worked out OK for you.

12. Things are good with me, thanks for asking.
We're getting tons of rain out here on the central coast. In fact, we had to cancel our ski trip w/e b/c of the hazardous road conditions and the snow storm in the mountains. Truthfully, I'd rather be on a bike any day. I'm training for the Solvang Century bike ride with MrShine in 6 wks from today.

Sorry you're hurting, my friend. I hope it gets better soon.

15. Solvang, in California? I had a lover in California, damn 25 years ago, and she talked
frequently about wanting to take me up to Solvang, and we never did get there.

I'd like to ride a Century as well, some day, but have to be realistic and understand that it's not going to happen.

20. It's beautiful there and the ride is very well supported, too.
they have a 50 mile route, as well....just for the record. This will be our third time doing it. Sometimes the weather can be a bit sketchy in early March, so we're hoping for the best this year. We've lucked out the other 2 times we've done it, but a couple of years ago they had major hail and rain. Yuck. The ride happens rain or shine, but I ain't ridin' in no rain, thank you very much. We've got the reso's already made in a nice hotel right in Solvang village and the childcare is already lined up, so even if it rains MrShine and I will get a romantic getaway weekend. Not a bad deal either way ya slice it. :D

Here's a picture from last March, just for you....

14. have you ever tried or considered vicoprofen?
that's the one i use- vicodin is hydrocodone + tylenol(acetominophine(?)), whereas vicoprofen is hydrocodone + advil(ibuprophen).

tylenol has never done a thing for me, but i do have a lot of pain from inflammation with my condition.

vicoprofen- ask for it by name.

19. Sorry to hear it, Redstone
I can never sleep on Hydrocodone. It winds me up so I use it to get stuff done. I have to take my last dose about 4 hours before I'm going to go to bed. The moon was full on the 22nd so it's probably not that. What about Sleepytime tea or Benedryl? Hope you feel better soon. I can empathize cuz I have pain issues, too, as you know. I've been taking Lyrica. Stops the sharpest pins and needles from the neuropathy in my lower extremities. Makes me sleepy so I take it at night.

even. Time to go do what I end up doing on these nights: Walking around in circles.

Really.

A few hours of that, and I'll be ready to go to the Land of Nod.

26. Thank you, Mrs G, I do appreciate your concern, you know that. But this is well below
other levels I've attained without problems.

And it's the highest level it's going to get to tonight. I do understand that you can only fight the pain but so far, and at that point you just have to accept that it's going to be there, and that throwing anything else at it would just be stupid.

I promise you that I'm not going to be stupid. I've lived with this long enogh to know when it's time to just go and walk in circles.

31. Hi Redstone. Please be careful taking that many Vicodin
With 8 a day you are right at the max dosage for Tylenol (acetaminophen). NEVER take more than 4 grams or 4000mg (same thing) of Tylenol. It can cause liver damage and even liver failure. I would highly advise not taking any medication containing tylenol with alcohol because that also has a negative impact on the liver.

There are lots of other pain-control remedies out there. It sounds to me like you need to discuss this with your MD.

Hope you feel better!

32. could be a drug interaction of some sort
I don't think its a good idea to be taking such a potent pain killer and a sedative like Lunesta at the same time.
Talk to your doc...and DON'T drink alcohol with those meds...It could make things worse. Sometimes if you are overtired, it makes it difficult to sleep as well. In fact, to me that might be a warning sign of a problem. PLEASE talk to your doctor.

Edited on Sun Jan-27-08 10:39 AM by Stuart G
is aspirin. It is exceptionally powerful and works on nerve pain. Added to your current mix of medicine, it may add some relief. Please do not underestimate it. While it is cheap, it does work on some pain. Consult with the doctor, and trying it (as an addition) may be worth a try...
..Best of luck..............Stuart.

It's just not good for your liver. I take Lortabs which are the same as Vicodin but with 350 mg of Tylenol rather than 750. I will add a few asprins if I have a full stomach.
