Mondays 'IN' The Undergroundrailroad

___________________________________________________________________________________________

Hello, hello, hello and welcome to Mondays 'IN' The Undergroundrailroad. How is everyone doing today? Well, I'm glad you dropped in to check things out in the Undergroundrailroad where we continue to celebrate Black History Month.

With Valentine's Day in mind, I thought I would serve Red Velvet Cake! Red Velvet Cake is a beautifully textured cake with a mild chocolate flavor and complemented with a thick white frosting. You can personalize the cake to your Valentine, triming his/her name on top of the cake. Another thought is to place two candles atop the cake and each making a secret wish. Your valentine can be your significant other, your best friend, your children, your sibling, your parents, or all the above!

If you are new to Mondays 'IN' The Undergroundrailroad I will give you an official welcome complete with the red carpet treatment.

Happy Valentine's Day DU

Black History Month

We are now into our second week of Black History Month and often it ends as quickly as it begins. While I love the heightened awareness that the month brings, it is simply not enough time to provide inclusiveness of the million plus African-American that have contributed so much to our world. Nevertheless, we still continue to do so in the Undergroundrailroad.

The following people that I have selected have made contributions that are significant and inspiring. Allow me to introduce them to you.

______________________________________________________________________________________

Shoshana Johnson

Shoshana Johnson, America's first black female prisoner of war, is now an author, speaker and public role model to women all over the world. She delivered a Black History Month presentation, her very first public speaking engagement, at Nassau Community College in Garden City, Long Island, New York.

"Seems odd to me that I am now part of black history," said Shoshana, a native of Panama and a second-generation soldier who lives in El Paso, Texas. "I dreamed of being the first black woman on the moon, of being the first black female president, but the first black female prisoner of war, never."

Shoshana, you're doing just great!

Suzanne Malveaux

Suzanne Malveaux is one of my favorite reporters at CNN. Every Saturday I can look forward to her reporting ON THE STORY a lively hour long show that discusses the top stories of the week from a female perspective.

Suzanne Malveaux is the White House correspondent for CNN. She earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from Harvard University, and a master's degree in broadcasting from Columbia University. Suzanne has received several Emmy Awards for her outstanding work. She does triathlons as a hobby.

Dr. Floyd Malveaux, MD, PhD

I have so much pride in the historical contributions of Black medical schools because my Father graduated from Meharry Medical College in Nashville. In thinking about Suzanne Malveaux, it reminded me of her father, Dr. Floyd Malveaux. Dr. Malveaux is the dean of the College of Medicine at Howard University. Dr. Malveaux is a nationally recognized expert on asthma and allergic diseases. At Howard University he has also served as chairman of the Department of Microbiology

Ron O' Neal

In the early 70's, the southern theatre showed few black movies. But for "Super Fly", the line swept down East Main Street. What did we care of the distance? We were hungry for movies with black faces and Ron O' Neal, dressed in his "Super Fly" Sunday-ish outfits, gave us one. In 1972, that year, that moment, "Super Fly" became an event -- and a kind of lifestyle if you were prone to such dramatics. But Ron O'Neal, in the role of "Priest", played that "Super Fly" role all too well.

I was very sad to learn that Ron O'Neal died of cancer, January 14, 2004.

Ron O'Neal attended Ohio State University. In 1967, he moved to New York and taught acting in Harlem to support himself, jointly appearing in summer stock and off-Broadway shows at the same time. He received critical acclaim in the 1970 Joseph Papp Public Theatre production of "No Place to Be Somebody" in which he won the Obie, Drama Desk, Clarence Derwent and Theatre World awards for his powerful performance. It was this performance that brought him to the attention of the producers of "Superfly."

It seems so strange, in a curious kind of way, to think that the true "Super Fly" is no longer here. But Ron O Neal leaves a documentary about black film, specifically called "blaxploitation", that black history academics will study for a very long, long time.

I will miss you "Super Fly".

Ed Davis

To Ed Davis, a longtime African-American auto dealer in Detroit, hearing the numbers 62399 from a Chrysler Corp. executive on Nov. 11, 1963 meant the fulfillment of a lifetime dream. After nearly 30 years of struggle, he had finally become the first African American to own an independent franchised dealership of one of America's major automakers. And yes, initially the cards were fully stacked against him.

Ed Davis moved to Detroit as a teen and frequented auto repair garages looking for work. His enthusiasm led to a job washing cars for 59 cents, which, in turn, led to a position on the Dodge assembly line. Later he would get an opportunity to sell autos from a dealer's back room because blacks were not permitted in the auto showroom.

In 1939 he opened Davis Motors Sales, a used car business, becoming the first African-American in the nation to do so. In 1996 Davis was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame, a recognition reserved for "those who have significantly affected the course of the motor vehicle industry." He joined, among others, Henry Ford and the Dodge Brothers.

He died in 1999 at age 88.

Brenda Joysmith

Brenda Joysmith is a renowned African-American artist who brings "joy" into my life everyday. When I awake, the first image I see is from the gallery of Ms. Joysmith and it brings a smile to my face.

Brenda Joysmith is a native of Memphis Tennessee and began her formal training in 1968 at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She then attended the University of Chicago where, in 1974, she received a B.A in Fine Arts.

Over the years, Ms. Joysmith's work has been seen on the sets of network television series such as The Cosby Show, In The Heat of The Night and in feature films such as Philadelphia, Lethal Weapon III, Music of the Heart and Love and Basketball to name a few. Her original pastel paintings are included in many prestigious individual, corporate and organization collections; including, Maya Angelo, Oprah Winfrey, Alpha Kappa Alpha National Sorority and The Colgate-Palmolive Company Permanent Collection, again, to name just a few.

Ed Bradley

I have been a fan of Ed Bradley for a very long time. I remembered his coverage of the Vietnam War, his coverage of the presidential campaign of Jimmy Carter, and his recent interview of Michael Jackson. His award winning work on 60 Minutes is about as good as it gets and you can always count on "truth" whenever, whatever, he is reporting on. He is truly an African-American ICON and has made significant contributions to broadcast journalism.

Edited on Mon Feb-09-04 04:04 PM by MrsGrumpy
A great man...wonderful ideas and thoughts as well.

Here are my answers. Sick today, so I'll be short.

1. Any room? Tough one. I'd have to say George's bedroom just to hear what he and his wife could possibly talk about. ;)

2. On Valentine's Day I'll be picking up my Grandma in Wisconsin to come here to Michigan for a visit. She's still moving around. I am blessed that my children know their Great Grandma.

3. I know about 20 phone numbers from memory. Just not my own. Hehehe

Mina, Happy happy Valentine's Day!!

:loveya: :loveya: :loveya:

Laura

On edit: Wooohooo, I think this is the first time I ever got to be first in Mina's thread. It's a banner day, and I am feeling better already.

2. Hi Mina!
Great Monday thread as usual! Such good information!

1. There are so many naughty answers to this question...I'll just go with The Oval Office. That Bush guy doesn't seem to trustworthy. I wanna keep an eye on him.

2. It's just Feb. 14th to me.

3. Just my parents and mine. :-)

15. Hi GOPisEvil and thanks for your kind words.
I'm so glad you enjoyed your visit today.

Well, you know, there are so many naughty answers but the Oval office would hold key information for our country. I hear you, I don't trust him at all.

I have to be honest, I don't really know that many telephone numbers myself. I rely too much on my cell phone that stores the numbers. I am still old fashioned. I have a "paper" address/telephone book that I carry with me always. Cell phones and computers occasionally malfunction and there is nothing like the old fashioned paper and pencil.

Valentine's Day is a regular day. People need health care on Valentine's day, people are at war, starving, in need of housing, walking to work, etc. I have learned, that certain things take priority no matter what the date is.

But don't forget *our* special day, KENTUCKY DERBY DAY!

Love ya,

Mina :loveya:

Again, Valentine's day *is* a regular day. People get sick, need medical care, etc.
Actually, in the era of the INTERNET, we are always with someone. I don't think the origin of Valentine's day factored in the WWW. We are always together at DU like a family.

1. Your secret camera would be in your living room right next to the front door. OK, I'm sure this holds meaning to you.

2. Again, like most Duers in the UGRR, Valentine's Day is just a regular day.

3. You know 7 numbers and I think that's great! As I mentioned in my previous post, I carry my address/phone book around with me everywhere.

Excellent La Serpiente!

Thanks so much for checking me out today and have a great week.

6. I like 60 Minutes a lot, and Ed Bradley most definitely rocks.
Edited on Mon Feb-09-04 04:19 PM by JCCyC
I wish I could watch it more. Having 1 1/2 jobs sucks. Okayyyyy... the questions:

1) Since I'm 100% sure most people will be placing cameras somewhere in the WH where they can get *'s dirty secrets, I'm going to place mine somewhere else: the Saudi royal palace meeting room. HA! The dirt I'm going to pickup on the *'es will be a BILLION times dirtier than yours! Nyah nyah nyah!

2) We don't have Valentine's here (we have something that could be translated as "Sweetheart Day" June 12) but I felt this strange, sudden urge to jettison our kids to some grandma or aunt and go to some hotel in the mountains -- right now (ok, next weekend). Will probably do that, too.

3) No more than 10 at any given time, and that's probably an overestimation. If my cellphone breaks, I'm ****ed. :dunce:

P.S.: One of these days I'm going to get type 2 diabetes and then I'll sue you!

You just might be right!

Have a great week.

7. Hi Mina and Happy Valentine's Day To You! Red Velvet Cake, Yum!!
I love the look of everything today. You always manage to cheer me up on back-to-work Mondays. Thanks for all the profiles. It's really cool that you mention the famous and not so famous contributions. I learn so much not only during Black History Month but every Monday.

Questions:

1. I love this question and it's a hard one to answer. I would say on Election Day at CNN? But what about the late night room where Condi and * spend all that time "working" on foreign affairs?

2. Out to dinner with my wife and kids. Yes, it's a family affair.

3. I know about 15-20 numbers (another good question Mina). I rely on my cell phone's memory, LOL!.

Have a wonderful rest of your week Mina and DU!

Glad to see you! You make Mondays fun

I like the up-to-date bios, they're newer, not well known, and aren't so far removed like the bios of the past.

Now for your questions:

1) I'll take the obvious answer, the Oval Office. I'd like to see the BFEE at work.

2) That's Saturday, Feb. 14, another day. Maybe another year...

3) Between home and work, I hold 20 off the top, with a couple of note pads to back me up.

Always fun in the Underground Railroad!

Did you try Coppola wine over the weekend? If so, what did you think?

I adore Ed Bradley. I watch about everthing he does. Thanks for puttng together such wonderful information. I think you should be on the DU front page. :bounce:

Questions of the Day

1. If you could have a secret camera in any room in the world, what room would you put it in?

Dick Cheney's undisclosed location. He just creeps me out and I'd love to keep an eye on him. If I had kids, which I don't, I'd like a camera in the house to be able to peek in on them during the day. :D

2. What are your Valentine's Day plans? Or just a regular day?
Nothing special. Probably just me, a bottle of wine and a Johnny Depp movie.

3. How many telephone numbers do you know from memory?

Three. My sister's, my brother's, and mine. All others I have written down and have to look up. I'm better at remembering words than numbers.

You have put together a wonderful daily Mina for Black History Month and I appreciate you hard work not to mention your desserts ;-)

1. I would like to have a camera in the Oval Office. Oh boy!

2. Valentine's Day is a special day because I like the traditions. All of my grandchildren receive special treats and hugs.

3. I know about 40 numbers without having to cheat.

11. Hi MIna,
I want you to be my Valentine!

I am having another "cold chills" moment. When I was a senior in high school, I went to a science fair in Nashville for outstanding science students. We first went to Meharry Medical School, and then to Vanderbilt Medical School. I must tell you, from that day on, Meharry has had my profound admiration, because their program for us was so outstanding. Vanderbilt is one of the best schools in the country, but Meharry put them to shame that day, and I have never forgotten.

1. In the kitchen, the heart of the household as far as I am concerned, since I love to cook. That way I could find who it is exactly who steals the meatballs out of my spaghetti sauce while it's cooking.

2. Valentine's Day is pretty much a regular day, although I usually make my husband some chocolate chip cookies, or something like that. He doesn't do holidays...what he does is bring me floweres or chocolates just any old time. He prefers spontaneity to expectations.

3. I know many, many telephone numbers from memory. I even remember our first telephone number when I was a little girl.

As always, love and hugs, and thanks for the UGRR.

14. Happy Monday! You do find the most interesting folks to
tell us about! Shoshana is truly a hero, and a fascinating person as well. I've always liked Ed Bradley, beginning with his Viet Nam days. And Ryan O'Neal? Oh, yesssssssss......drool.........I remember Super Fly!!!

Another of my favorite people is Ida B. Wells. My daughter's research during Black History Month when she was in middle school wasn't what she wanted - she wanted someone that not "everyone" else was researching. So she "found" Ida Wells.

Ida. B. Wells-Barnett
(1862-1931)
Journalist

Ida B. Wells-Barnett (1862-1931), an African American journalist, was an active crusader against lynching and a champion of social and political justice for African Americans.

Fascinating woman, born a slave just 6 months before the Emancipation Proclamation - for more about her, read her autobiography, which was edited by her daughter, Alfreda M. Duster, "Crusader for Justice: The Autobiography of Ida B. Wells (1970)".

On to your questions!

1. I'd LOVE to have a camera in the Sit Room at the White House.....

2. Valentine's Day is also the day the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race starts here in Fairbanks. I'm a volunteer, so I'll be on the starting gate. For more info about the "toughest sled dog race on earth", 1000 miles of wilderness, see http://www.yukonquest.org/

Trying to hold them back at the starting line isn't easy!

The next day is our anniversary, and the 18th is my sweetie's birthday, so we're celebrating Saturday night at Chena Hot Springs Resort http://www.chenahotsprings.com/

Summer - Outdoor Pool - Also open all winter!

3. Very few - blast speed dial anyway! Someone called the other day to get my sister-in-law's phone number.....uh, speed 7?

:loveya::hug: UGRR! Have a great day!

20. Good Afternoon, my darling Mina!
Sorry I've been AWOL (hee-hee) these last few weeks. I've missed you. As always, a wonderful, informative thread about the contributions of African-Americans to this great country. Something the freepers will never admit is that we are great because of the many different colors, cultures and faiths that fall under the heading 'American'.

I've always liked Ed Bradley, and his gold earring is just the COOLEST!

Now for the questions (good ones, too!)

1. A secret camera in the booking room of the concentration camp at Guantanamo Bay. Show the world the Nazi tactics we're using. No charge, no advice of counsel. How Un-American is that? We're supposed to be the good guys, here.

2. My wife and I are taking my step-daughter and her husband for a nice meal. Then I'll present my wife with the diamond and sapphire ring I got her. :-)

3. Sheesh, I don't know. My home number. My cell phone and my wife's. My stepdaughter and her cell. My mother and my brother. That's about it.

Have a great rest of the day, Mina. :loveya:

21. Hello - nice to see you again
That red velvet cake should be in the dictionary next to "decadent."

You sure found a beautiful picture of Shoshana. She looks terrific, and what a smile! Thanks for all of the other profiles too.

Now on to the questions...

1. If you could have a secret camera in any room in the world, what room would you put it in?

I think I might say "no thanks" to that - I really can't think of anyone's life I would want to know in that much detail! Not even me! :D

2. What are your Valentine's Day plans? Or just a regular day?

Regular day as far as I know. Lately my regular days have been pretty "blah" though, so maybe I should make plans to change that and do something special for myself.

3. How many telephone numbers do you know from memory?

Probably about 25 or 30 -- but the weird thing is, a lot of the numbers I do remember by heart are from a long time ago. I could tell you my best friend from high school's home phone number, but I couldn't tell you her number in LA. Some things just get imprinted early I guess!

Have a good one.

And OMG Shoshana looks so good! she has a future as a tv hostess or something

The questions..

1.

Hmm

Tough one

Maybe somewhere where I could see the code to something really valuable :D

2.

I'm going to work lot's to do in the restaurant biz on valentines.

3.

This is funny I know my families nr, and to our restaurant, and I know the nr to our internet operator (Kinda tells you how often I've had to call)

24. Mina! My favorite cake!
Didja know that traditionally it is colored with red crepe paper? My mother told me that. I could eat my weight in red velvet cake!

Thanks for posting all the great biographies! Brenda Joysmith's work is great! She is so amazingly talented. I didn't know that Ron O'Neal died. That's sad news.

Well, to answer your questions:

1. I'd actually like to have a camera, not in any room, but in the woods by our Nature Center. I'd like to see what kinds of animals roam about when people aren't around.

2. We aren't doing anything for Valentine's Day. Restaurants are way too busy that night, so it would be more romantic to stay home and watch some movies.

3. I know four-my home number, my husband's job, my mother's house, and my father's house. All others I need to look up.

See you next week!

25. Hello Mina
Just stopping by quickly before life moves me to yet another catastrophe that demands my full attention... :)

1. If you could have a secret camera in any room in the world, what room would you put it in?

Whoever put the secret camera in my room.

2. What are your Valentine's Day plans? Or just a regular day?

We're going to watch the Avalanche kick some major Redwings booty. :D

3. How many telephone numbers do you know from memory?

Hmm, let's see. There's 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, ... hmmm. Which one am I forgetting, OH! 0. Cool, I guess I know all ten. :)

26. I wish
I could see pictures, now. Your Monday threads are always great, and I love your graphics. I'll have to come back later if the problem goes away. I'm really enjoying your Mondays this month, with your focus on Black History.

1. If you could have a secret camera in any room in the world, what room would you put it in? This one has me stumped. I'll have to think about it. An intriguing idea.

2. What are your Valentine's Day plans? Or just a regular day? Just a regular day, as far as I know. No babysitters available.

3. How many telephone numbers do you know from memory? Only about 10, or so. I've become lazy about it since most phones have memory dial, now.

28. Happy Tuesday morning darling Mina!
Hello Mina, and a Happy Valentines day to my favorite DUer!

Sorry for my late reply but work has been absolutely insane lately.

Another excellent article this week. I was especially touched by your tribute to Ron O’Neal, I thought I was the only person who felt a little bit of sad movie nostalgia when I heard of his passing. I’ve seen his documentary several times now and it always amazes me that so many African Americans made so many films that generated so much money with tiny budgets and perceived niche audiences. Of course Hollywood notices and moved much of the production from New York City to Hollywood, increased production schedules (but not budgets) and saturated the market until the genre simply evaporated.

Thankfully most of the “Blaxpoiltation” titles have enjoyed tremendous popularity on home video in various formats, and with the availability of DVD, new younger audiences can see these films with crisp digital clarity and in widescreen.

I’d like to send a Monday’s shout-out to all of our Blaxploitation starts be they here or in the great beyond. Thanks to Fred Williamson, Richard Roundtree, Jim Brown, the lovely and talented Pam Grier, Sheila Frazier, Antonio Fargas, and of course Ron O’Neal himself.

I’d also like to remember the composer of, arguably the best film soundtrack of all time, Curtis Mayfield and the soundtrack was, of course, Superfly. Curtis Mayfield died tragically from complications of diabetes following a horrible accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down.

The soundtrack to Superfly was one of the first vinyl records I owned as a kid and I cherish the fond memories of listening to it in my bedroom on a small red-plastic record player. And yes, it was a gift from my Mom, she was Motown-loving teen in the era of the Beatles, and her taste rubbed off on me.

Goodbye Ron, we’ll miss you. And, as for philosophies of life and character I’d like to quote Jim Brown on his conditions for making a film (that he adheres to even today), “I win all the fights, I get all the women, and I don’t ever die”.

Words to live by. Thankfully guys like Jim Brown have carried on the tradition of the blaxploitation genre by bankrolling direct to video and direct to cable TV films including the extremely entertaining “Original Gangsters” where he reunites all the classic blaxploitation stars for a new adventure.

Hats off to the true pioneers of urban cinema!

I’ll take two slices of cake please, one for me and one for Mrs. McLargehuge J

Questions of the Day

1. If you could have a secret camera in any room in the world, what room would you put it in?

Hmmmmmm… I’d put it in the main lobby of Victoria Station. I’m a people watcher and what better place to watch people than there?

2. What are your Valentine's Day plans? Or just a regular day?

We aren’t sure. It looks like Valentine themed sugar cookies will be the treat of the day. I think we’ll probably spend some time at my Mother in Law’s house (I have to plan a soup kitchen menu for the following day), then maybe chill out at home and watch movies, then when Ian goes to bed… who knows.

3. How many telephone numbers do you know from memory?

I don’t remember… sometimes I don’t even remember mine!

29. I have been an admirer of
Ed Bradley 4 many years. I will never forget his '60 Minutes' interview of Lena Horne; at one point they were sitting on a park bench in Central Park - she facing foward, he sideways toward her w/ his arm over the bench back. He was looking @ her like a 10 year old falling in love 4 the first time. It was endearing. He was soooo smitten w/ her (& rightly so) and he didn't care who knew it.
