I am among the walking dead at work

and I can't wait for it to be over.

They offered buyouts for voluntary layoffs and even more are likely later (but probably without the perks). I decided to take it.

Now I'm among the undead. No one is talking to me and I have very little to add at this point. If I was happy here, I might have fought a little harder to stay.

There are no going-away parties, not that I would want one anyway as no one would probably show anyway, but still.

So, how do you do this with class, grace and dignity?

1. You took your best option, you worked hard and you earned 'the buy out'.

You haven't lost any dignity, in my book.

It seems you see the light and weighed your options and decided to take off for a new venture!

2. You're getting paid to look for another job.

By getting unemployment. Look at as a paid vacation.

6. No vacation

I need a job. Once I get all the groundwork laid, I may even take some freelance work or something part time. I survived some really hard times already. I'm not going back there.

3. Take the perks and run

It happened to me in the early 90s. The company, which was huge, is now dead.

Take a really nice brief vacation, and then buckle down to finding the next job. I sat on my ass too long and made my own life difficult as the money ran out.

5. I wouldn't doubt if the company was gone

in five years and then I would be older and closer to facing age discrimination.

A friend in HR said the initial offers are best and if you can hang on until the end (I don't have the seniority.), but everyone in the middle gets screwed.

I'm not in any position to take a vacation. My hope is that I land a new job before the money and bennies run out (I'll still be eligible for unemployment if all else fails.) so I have the money to redo the roof and gutters without doing a loan.
