February 9: Today in African-American history
1899
A Black secret organization called ISDC, Invincible Sons and Daughters of Commerce, publishes an add in Black newspapers announcing to underwrite the future of Black communities through life insurance, loans, and a national network.

1952
Ralph Ellison, novelist, wins the National Book Award for Invisible Man. He also publishes a collection of essays called "Shadow and Act".

1964
Arthur Ashe, Black tennis star, is selected to the U.S. Davis Cup Team. He will become the first Black to win the U.S. Open men's single championship
