Songs that contain a reference to alcohol in the title.
I really should've done this back when I was writing my final paper for my senior seminar class last semester (the class was Anthropology of Alcohol, and my paper focused on the role of alcohol in popular music), but what the heck. :)

Here are the ones that made it onto my compilation CD:
- Alcohol (Barenaked Ladies)
- Margaritaville (Jimmy Buffett)
- Whiskey in the Jar (trad., but I used the Thin Lizzy version)
- One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer (John Lee Hooker)
- Whiskey Man (John Entwistle)
- Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers (ZZ Top)
- Streams of Whiskey (The Pogues)
- Whiskey Rock-a-Roller (Lynyrd Skynyrd)
- Whiskey River (Willie Nelson)
- Red Red Wine (UB40)

I have a ton of others that either a) were on the CD but didn't directly reference alcohol in the title, b) didn't fit on the CD but directly referenced alcohol in the title, or c) didn't get on the CD but referenced alcohol in a less direct manner in the title (e.g., references to drinking, drunkenness, hangovers, etc.). :) I'll be interested to see what y'all can come up with! :hi:

(Disclaimer: Yes, I know I'm a huge nerd, but that was quite possibly the most fun paper I have ever written - and I got a good grade on it, too!) :D

12. Since you're a Brit, I'll match your classic-punk USA-band reference with "Alcohol" by GBH.
I see you on my TV screen
I see you in the magazines
I don't remember all your names
but I love you running through my veins.

Alcohol, oh alcohol...
I love you in my brain;
Alcohol, oh alcohol...
I don't want you again!

11. I had an affair 15 years ago in Johannesburg, and the soundtrack was Red Red Wine
Edited on Tue Jan-22-08 04:09 PM by HamdenRice
My then wife and I were breaking up anyway and I had a long research trip to Jo'burg for the summer. I ran into a friend I had had a crush on several years before -- an artist named Rachel. She was breaking up with her boyfriend, Frank, who had decided to drink himself to death. (He accomplished his goal about 4 months after I returned to the US.)

She called me her "nyatsi," which means "spare tire," even though she didn't speak Zulu (she was South African-Indian). Before I left that summer, she gave me several paintings that right now hang in my living room.

17. The Jose Cuervo song by Shelley West.
Well it's Sunday Mornin'

And the sun in shinin'

In my eye that is open

And my head is spinnin'

Was the life of the party

I can't stop grinnin'

I had to much Tequila last night

Jose Cuervo you are a friend of mine

I like to drink you with a little salt and lime

Did I kiss all the cowboys?

Did I shoot out the lights?

Did I dance on the bar?

Did I start a fight?

Now wait a minute

Things don't look to familiar

Who is this cowboy

Who's sleepin' beside me?

He's awful cute, but how'd I

Get his shirt on?

I had to much Tequila last night

Jose Cuervo you are a friend of mine

I like to drink you with a little salt and lime

Did I kiss all the cowboys?

Did I shoot out the lights?

Did I dance on the bar?

Did I start a fight?

All those little shooters

How I love to drink 'em down

Come on bartender

Let's have another round

Well the music is playing

And my spirits are high

Tomorrow might be painful

But tonight we're gonna fly

Jose Cuervo you are a friend of mine

I like to drink you with a little salt and lime

Every time we get together

I sure have a good time

You're my friend

You're the best

Mi amigo

(Tequila)

Jose Cuervo you are a friend of mine

I like to drink you with a little salt and lime

Did I kiss all the cowboys?

Did I shoot out the lights?

Did I dance on the bar?

Did I start a fight?

20. Ten rounds with Jose Cuervo

Artist: Byrd Tracy
Song: Ten Rounds With Jose Cuervo
Album: Ten Rounds
Tracy Byrd Sheet Music
Tracy Byrd CDs

I walked in and the band just started
the singer couldn't care a tune in a bucket
Was on a mission to drown her memory but
I thought no way with all this rukus

But after one round with Jose Cuervo
I caught my boots tapping along with the beat
And After two rounds with Jose Cuervo
The band was sounding pretty darn good to me

Then some stranger asked me to dance
and i reviled to her my two left feet
Said "Don't get me wrong, im glad you asked,
But tonight's about beating an old memory

Then after Three rounds with Jose Cuervo
I let her lead me out on the floor
And after Four rounds with Jose Cuervo
I was showing off moves never seen before

Well, round five or round six
I forgot what I came to forget
After Round seven, Or was it eight?
I bought a round for the whole dang place

And after nine rounds with Jose Cuervo
They were counting me out and i was about to give in
Then after ten rounds with Jose Cuervo
I lost count and started counting again

One round with Jose Cuervo
I went two rounds
Three rounds

Yes, it's a song about either vigilante justice or lynching, depending on your viewpoint, but it DOES have an alcoholic beverage in the title.

And yes, Country contains more songs about booze than any other genre.

Take Your Whiskey Home

Written by:

Michael Anthony, Alex Van Halen.

---
Well, my baby, she don't want me around.
She said she's tired of watchin' me fall down.
She wants the good life, only the best.
But I like that bottle better than the rest.
And she said: I think that you're headed for a whole lot of trouble.
Well, I think that you're headed for a whole lot of trouble.
Well, I think that you're headed for a whole lot of trouble.
If you take your whiskey...

Well, that liquor in the nighttime leaves strange memories.
Seems a lifetime since yesterday.
Come the daybreak, come the morrow,
that woman's waited up all night for me again.
She said: Well, I think that you're headed for a whole lot of trouble.
Yeah, I think that you're headed for a whole lot of trouble.
Yeah, you know that you're headed for a lot of trouble.
If you take your whiskey home.

Some goes to women, some goes to Jesus,
though I'm absolutely certain both's all right.
But it takes me at least halfway to the label
'fore I can even make it through the night.
Well, I think that you're headed for a whole lot of trouble.
Yeah, I think that you're headed for a whole lot of trouble.
Yeah, you know that you're headed for a lot of trouble.
If you take your whiskey home.

45. Several.
Bottle of Wine, Good friend of Mine (Tom Paxton)

Werewolves of London by Warren Zevon (I saw him drinkin' a pina colada. His hair was PERFECT.) LOL

However Much I Booze, The Who (from The Who By Numbers album--an underrated one)

Kisses Sweeter Than Wine (Peter,Paul & Mary)

Days of Wine and Roses (Henry Mancini)

Lime in the Coconut by Harry Nilsson (I think it mentions rum, I'm not sure)

Who Are You, The Who (I woke up in a Soho doorway/a policeman knew my name/ He said, "You can go sleep at home tonight/if you can get up and walk away".)

Lola, by the Kinks ("You drink champagne and it tastes just like Coca-Cola.")

The New Centurions, by The Kinks, from "Preservation, Act II". Doesn't specifically mention alcohol, but lots of other things the Moral Majority doesn't like (Down with sex and sin, down with vice, heroin, down with pornography, down with vice, lechery, and debauchery.)

There's a Tavern in the Town (very very old song). When I was a kid, they used it in Jax Beer commercials where a lady would say "Birdies, sing!!" in a line drawing cartoon.

Beer Barrel Polka

Cigareets, whiskey and wild wild women, they'll drive ya crazy, they'll drive ya insane.
(I have no idea where this song comes from, they sang it on The Muppet Show)

Bright College Days -- Tom Lehrer
"Bright college days, oh carefree days on high, to thee we sing with our glasses raised on high, let's drink a toast as each of us recalls, ivy-covered professors in ivy-covered halls.
Turn on the spigot, pour the beer and swig it, and gaudeamus igit-ur." (There's more).
