If the feds sent you a "tax rebate" check, what would you do with the money?
Congress is said to be working with the WH on a stimulus package including "tax rebate" checks of $800 for individuals and $1600 for households (to be paid for by several future generations, of course, along with the rest of the bill for the Reagan/Bush/Bush deficits).

If you got a check, what would you do with the money?

I think I would use mine to pay 2007 income taxes.

If there was any left over, I'd use it to replace my water heater.

Of course I have to do those things anyway. So I don't know that my spending will stimulate the economy.

2. Buy heating oil
so I can set my thermostat above 50 degrees. What's left will be used to repair Lelapin's car.

If a household is defined by me and my student daughter, there might be enough to make a trip to Portland. ;)

12. I bought an inexpensive house, live frugally.
I found a run down house on 15 acres here in Tennessee that cost me roughly one years gross pay. I fixed it up myself & put it on a five year mortgage. I also had lived in a rental for ten years so I had a substantial down payment.

I didn't follow Dave Ramsey's plan but rather just paid as much as I could towards all my bills. Bonuses, overtime pay and as much as I could out of each normal pay check.

Hey, it's "found money" you didn't know you would be getting. In my state the money from the lottery goes to college scholarships so it is at least helping someone. If you win, its just icing on the cake. BTW, you might ought to wait until they have an insane jackpot as it is only 20 million now.

28. but it comes out of your 2008 refund correct?
Edited on Tue Jan-22-08 03:24 PM by pitohui
i wouldn't be able to do anything with it, other than find a short term interest bearing account, if i am just going to have to pay it back (or else get no tax refund) in april 2009

the $300 we got early in the dictatorship, those came out of the next year's tax refund and just meant we would have had less to spend on our annual spring vacation if we had spent it on crap

is this proposal one bit different?

$1600 is a lot of cash to waste and then find out later, because our whole vacation budget is usually $2K -- we'd be screwed if we spent this and found out it meant our refund had gone bye-bye

i don't need to take money out of one pocket and put it in the other pocket and then kid myself i'm suddenly richer, that's a way to dig a whole for yourself if you ask me

29. buying a hot water heater
would contribute to economy stimulation. By purchasing a HWH, you purchase something from a retailer who purchased it from a vendor, who purchased it from a manufacturer where some guy/gal built it. If nobody bought HWH's these people would be out of business/work.

So, back to the original question. What would I do with the money? I'd pay bills. I think that's where many people are right now. Heating bill, electric bill, mortgage...ect....

Because what I have heard about it is - it's nothing more than an advance on income tax rebates. So if that's the case, what's the point? If we get back money we were going to get back anyway, it's really only smoke and mirrors.

That said, I want a new smoker.
