9. The sound of frustration

as old-timers and new-timers alike search DU in vain, in recent months, for the original posts that spawned overwhelming cascades of unfunny copycats.

Jeez, people...I return after a bit of an absence and it seems like the new wave of Lounge copycatting's being done by people utterly incapable of grasping the point that a copycat thread should at least attempt to be somewhat humorous. I mean, I'm not asking for much: a rolling-the-eyes kind of weak and pathetic humor is better than none at all. It's not like many of the erstwhile copycat threads hereabouts were works of art, but they were at least generally recognizable as attempts at levity. One of the lesser reasons why DU has sucked so vigorously of late, but still an aggravating one.

Offenders, repeat after me: there is no point -- absolutely no point at all -- to copycat threads that are not only not funny but that are less funny than the original thread's title and, indeed, suck all of the funny out of the room when they appear.

As a hypothetical example, unfunny copycats of a thread titled "I saw a car in the park today" might include "I pawed a star in the park today" (okay...that one was kinda droll, illustrating one of the consequences of the perpetual curse of being a genius copycatter who cannot turn his talent off like a mere switch), "I wore a bar in the spark, Uday," "I swore a spar in the mark blue-ray," and "Eyesore a bra pin huh dark display." I mean, that kind of stuff's okay if it's some kind of weak attempt at engendering the kind of pathos generated by Andy Kaufman's comedy-inept Foreign Man character, or some kind of pretentious dadaist crap, but.....no...actually...actually, it's not even funny then. It's just bad. Bad...bad...bad.

So, in summary, this should be the official DU ringtone: "bad...bad...bad..." (but not in the Michael Jackson intonation)
