The name of the type of cat known as a ?tabby,? identifiable for the
tiger-like stripes along its sides, has been traced back to
al-'Attâbìya, a suburb of the city of Baghdad, Iraq.

1. "Tabby" Refers to a Kind of Striped Cloth Made There
and striped cats were called tabby after the cloth.

"Check Mate" id as corruption of the Persian alShah mat - the king is dead.
