1. It can take a while, goats are stubborn little buggers even when they're young.

3. almost four years
Thank goodness he was in cloth, I hate to imagine what four years of sposies would have cost me, let alone the planet.

12. I'm not sure how that could be the case.
I did the math and I came out ahead a lot of money, even when I factored in buying a $600 washing machine.

13. we only have one diaper service in my area
can't really shop around for better pricing. I also have a septic system, not on public water so the extra washing, and toilet flushing has to be taken in to consideration. I can diaper my daughter for about 12 bucks a week.

14. Service is a rip-off.
Not counting the washer (which paid for itself in not having to do coin-op laundry) we spent about $500 for four years, factoring in the cost of the diapers and laundry expenses (which could have been less, but LK has allergies and needs an expensive detergent.)

15. so, BB Maine-ah has allergies
(got them from Mum) her laundry detergent alone is about 10 bucks a month, that is without having to wash cloth diapers. That alone is 120 bucks a year. I figure double that if I had to wash diapers, so 240 bucks a year in just detergent. Pumping my septic more often because of more laundry, and more flushing, that alone is 200-300 bucks every 2 years currently. It's also more wear and tear on a washer and dryer that are 10 years old. You can't line dry up here in the winter. Nor will I be tripping over clothes racks inside, or having a dog knock 'em over, or the baby pulling 'em down.

I'm not knocking cloth diapers, I seriously plan to switch when it comes time to potty train because she'll be able to feel that she's wet. Right now though, between frugal shopping, coupons and sales, it is cheaper to use disposable diapers.

4. Waaay too long
But my son had some issues in that department, an early bout of extreme constipation was a major setback in comfortable pottying.

5. I am now of the firm convinction that the time needed for potty training
Edited on Fri Jan-18-08 10:48 AM by hedgehog
is directly related to the tenderness of the given baby butt. Some of my kids would be in diapers today if I let them. Two of my daughters trained themselves at about 18 months because they had such bad diaper rash!

My favorites - one kid was old enough to be bribed with Legos. Another frustated me for a week until I sat her down on the potty and sat there with her until she peed. Then it was like a light bulb went off "OHHHHH.... so that's what this is all about!" and she was done with diapers.

BTW - I also had two who were between 6 and 8 before they stayed dry though the night. We just treated it as one of those things and changed the sheets.

7. It was four years for my daughter but
she had some urinary tract issues that hindered things. My son was much easier, relatively speaking.

9. Our daughter was very stubborn, but she suddenly became potty trained at 3
She knew how to go on the potty at 18 months old, but she stubbornly refused to do it consistently. Finally, when she hit three years old, she just started going on the toilet and has never really looked back. She only had maybe 3-4 "accidents" over those first several months after she turned three. It was like a switch was flipped inside her head.

10. Pee, 3 years; poo, an extra year
MG Jr. is a genius, really, and has the vocabulary of a 40-year-old, but the toidy? NOTHIN' DOIN'. I still have a pack of pullups (I thought he was going to outgrow the largest size before he finally tweaked to the toilet thing), so I use them at night because he's had a pee accident or two several months ago. But as soon as I get to the mall and use our Christmas gift cards to buy a mattress cover, they're going too.

We cut him some slack, though, because he had constipation issues. And now, at 4 years, 2 months, he's a pro.

11. Almost 4... took the low-stress approach and it worked great.
The potty chair was made available and rewards given, but no pressure. The final reward was big kid undies to replace the jumbo pull-ups :)

16. Mine was almost 4 also...
But I wasn't hyper vigilant about it. He peed on the potty everyday at daycare for a long time before he would do it at home. He just flat out refused at home and I didn't push it because I knew he would get there eventually. Once he decided he wanted to get out of the Pull Ups, it only took about 2 days and he was fully trained.
