Lounge Challenge: Find something cuter than this (Dial-up warning)

I am currently writing a paper on these guys -- Piping Plovers. This is what the chicks look like.

*melt*

Not to mention that the parents will fake a broken wing if you get too close to their babies!

5. Not as cute but this is a cattle egret chick
in its nest at a local rookery.

I also found this baby killdeer, related to the plover, down in the wetlands at South Padre Island, Texas.

20. Every year I have killdeer nest in in my driveway.
We live on a gravel road so we have a gravel drive, and every spring I look forward to my killdeer raising their chicks. I just love them.

95. The photo that first spurred my interest in birding and bird
photography was this one, a killdeer sitting on its nest. I shot this with an old point and shoot camera. This little killdeer was sitting on my backyard protecting its nest.

I was able to get just a few feet away. Her mate was doing the "distraction" dance just off to the side. The eggs did hatch btw. :)

17. we have the same issue here on the North Coast....
Beach closures piss off the folks who just can't understand why they shouldn't drive all over the dunes whenever they want to. One of my grad students is studying part of the food base for plovers on local beaches (although that's NOT what her thesis will say, LOL, since she's not actually studying the birds, their feeding, etc-- but rather wrack line arthropod communities).

71. They are cute, but I've been brainwashed
Every time I see baby sea turtles, I think of the nature shows that have to fucking show and tell me how all of fucking creation swoops in to eat the poor little bastards and that only 1 in a 1000 survive and then tell me it's okay because that's life.

So now everytime I see one, it makes me sad. And mad.  :hi:

77. We're genetically pre-disposed the say "AAAWWWWEEEEE!" when we see cuteness.
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/01/03/science/03cute.html

Scientists who study the evolution of visual signaling have identified a wide and still expanding assortment of features and behaviors that make something look cute: bright forward-facing eyes set low on a big round face, a pair of big round ears, floppy limbs and a side-to-side, teeter-totter gait, among many others.

Cute cues are those that indicate extreme youth, vulnerability, harmlessness and need, scientists say, and attending to them closely makes good Darwinian sense. As a species whose youngest members are so pathetically helpless they can't lift their heads to suckle without adult supervision, human beings must be wired to respond quickly and gamely to any and all signs of infantile desire.

The human cuteness detector is set at such a low bar, researchers said, that it sweeps in and deems cute practically anything remotely resembling a human baby or a part thereof, and so ends up including the young of virtually every mammalian species, fuzzy-headed birds like Japanese cranes, woolly bear caterpillars, a bobbing balloon, a big round rock stacked on a smaller rock, a colon, a hyphen and a close parenthesis typed in succession.

What do you plan to do? PM me if you don't want to declare your intentions in public. ;) Looking back on it, I wish I would have done something more scientific as I am gravitating more and more to the outdoors.

She's eight now but Freckles is still a puppy. That was taken two months ago. They're both still very cute.
