Why is winter music considered "Christmas" music?
Edited on Mon Jan-14-08 02:19 AM by mycritters2
I've been listening to my Pandora play list, and began to wonder...Why do we consider songs like "Winter Wonderland", "Sleigh Ride", "Baby, It's Cold Outside", and "Jingle Bells" Christmas music? These songs have nothing to do with Christmas. They're about Winter, snow, etc. There's a whole lot of winter to come when Christmas is over.

So, I'm playin' 'em. So there!

5. Not all the writers were Christian.

Some wanted non-Jesus Christmas songs that everyone could sing.

6. I think you misunderstood my question.I'm not objecting to this music.
Indeed, I love lots of these songs. I just don't understand why we stop listening to it after Christmas. Why don't we hear this music all winter long?

7. Oh!
Yes, I misunderstood.
Well, some of the songs are good but some really annoy the hell out of me so I'm glad we don't hear them all year round. :)

9. Anything can be made into Christmas music.
All it needs is enough people to think that it must be about Christmas. The Thad Jones tune 'A Child is Born' is a great example. He wrote it about the birth of his first child, and it wasn't long before it started appearing on Jazz Christmas albums.

10. Because you don't but gifts, cards, and candy for winter...
It's time for Valentine's Day after Christmas.

12. But "Sleigh Ride", or "Let It Snow" seem more apropo to February
than to December.

11. I am sure it is that I am really dumb
but I'd assumed it was because Christmas was in the winter.

I wonder whether Australian Christmas carols are about surfing and barbecues on the beach?

13. But Winter doesn't end with Christmas.
Around these parts, it's just beginning. And the lyrics to "Winter Wonderland" or "Let It Snow" don't mention Christmas. They mention Winter, which began on December 21, and ends on March 21.

14. I've wondered that too
Those songs don't even MENTION Christmas.

I think that they were originally winter songs that got taken over for the secular version of Christmas. The school choir can sing them without offending anybody. Now they are thought of as "Christmas carols," whether that was their intention or not.
