What are the candidates' ethnicities?
Clark somehow reminds me of my grandparents, who were Polish.

Dean looks kinda Polish, too, maybe with some German. I'm of German and Polish descent, and I've seen a gallery with some of his old photos, and he looked starkly like me!

Kerry is Irish, but apparently also a little bit Jew.

I've heard Kucinich has Slavic blood.

I have not a clue about Sharpton or Edwards.

2. Dean?
Edited on Sat Feb-07-04 10:38 PM by JohnKleeb
Hes very WASPy I hear, of old pilgrim stock
Kucinich yep hes Croatian/Irish, best mix after Slovene/Irish :)
hes a fellow South Slav and Irish :).
Clark has Jewish blood and from what I read they were Poles
I am like Kucinich lol a Celt Slav, with some German and Slovak.
Kerry's Jewish blood was Czech.
Edwards I would assume hes English
Gephardt is German
Lieberman is Jewish and they were Polish
Graham I assume was English
Sharpton is African American
Either way IMO DK has the coolest ethnic background but I am biased because ours is simliar.

4. Going by looks is VERY unreliable.
Examples -- my wife, German/Polish descent, very Irish-looking. People from Ireland are always bothering her about her ancestry. And my dad, 100% Northern German ancestry, dark hair & eyes, very dark complexion, often mistaken for hispanic or middle-eastern.

Interesting question, though. Remember the SNL parody ads during the 1988 Dukakis vs. Bush campaign? "Vote for Bush, he's Whiter."

5. Here's a genealogy site with their ancestries
http://members.aol.com/wreitwiesn/candidates2004/

It looks like Clark's father was Jewish and his mother was from Little Rock. Her maiden name was Updegraff.

Dean's father came from colonial New England stock, with a little French mixed in, while his mother had lines going back to the Dutch colonists in New York and also to Scottish nobility.

Kerry's father's parents were Jewish. On his mother's side, he comes from a bunch of leading colonial New English families -- Cabots and Winthrops and Dudleys and such.

Kucinich's parents were born in Slovenia.

Edwards' background isn't clear from this site, except that his father was a mill worker.

For whatever it's worth, Dean and Kerry are both distantly related to Bush -- though apparently not to each other.

8. Are the Cabot's of Boston
related to the explorer John Cabot? (whose non-anglicized name was Giovanni Caboto.) If so, that would make Kerry part Italian as well.
