Stealth fighter overflies my house
...at about 10K feet. Pretty impressive, dark triangle shape. It may be invisible to radar, but the engine noise is what made me look up. Don't see a lot of military traffic around here, but the past few weeks we've had a pair a C-130's buzz the mountains nearby (low enough to read the tail numbers!), and last winter I saw a B-2 go over. Interestingly, although the B-2 was surely black, the reflection off the snow turned the bottom of it practically silver.

Happy to say, none of these guys loitered. :)

1. That's the one plane I've never seen fly in person...
...the weirdest? The British Vulcan Bomber. That thing was so slow I thought it would drop out of the sky like a stone.

15. I LOVE the Vulcan bomber......
Of course, once we'd established that Spock and his family were friendly, we had no further use for it and it was retired....

:-)

Seriously though - big-ass delta wings and SO LOUD!!!

B-2 flew over my neighborhood on the way to the Pops go the Fourth on the Esplanade next to the Charles River about 2-3 years ago.

I forgot about it(flyover before concert) and it freaked me out. Starts off as a low hum and keeps getting louder, and louder....

3. pssst
it wasn't the F117 or the B2, it was the little dude I have as my avatar ;). They're coming to take you away.

I've seen the F117 a couple of times, the loudest thing (aircraft wise) I've heard is the gun from an A10

11. Concorde on full throttle and climbing could bury the warthog's
gunfire sounds.

4. Oh, hey...did you catch that show on the History Channel?
The aviation archeologist? I thought that would be right up your alley.

9. You know, I DID see that
I actually caught a teaser promo in the morning and made plans to watch it that afternoon.

What struck me as weird was that I had never heard of the guy. I mean, that's really strange. It's a pretty small community, maybe a dozen or so guys in the country who really take it seriously (read: obsessively), and a bunch who do it for fun once or twice.

I was also amazed at the level of his funding; that one bit where he had the boat and advanced side-looking sonar before he started working with that sub-sand device... I wonder how much money he got out of the survivor's descendants to follow his dreams.

Maybe I'm just bitter because I haven't had a TV show about me... actually, I was more disappointed people I've met who are really into it (like Pete Merlin) didn't get a mention. To me, doing a special about aviation archeology without mentioning Pete is like doing a baseball special without mentioning Babe Ruth.

12. Yeah, I was wondering how badly he was soaking those folks!
He was kind of irritating in a non-threatenting way...I just didn't like him a whole lot. Although, that show was interesting.

6. I can always tell when war is near
the C-130 traffic picks up considerably in my area.

Were they heading east or west?

10. I could absolutely distinguish the shape
...just from watching them on TV. :)

The F-117 was heading east to west; the C-130s earlier were going north to south. And freakin' low!

7. Whew! Good thing they overflew!
Means they missed you and, perhaps, bombed someone else. :-)

Crap, we had something fly over NYC on July 4 as part of the show, and now I can't remember if it was a steaclth bomber or the flying fortress. You'd think I'd remember, being as they don't look alike at all, but by golly, I can't. Impressive, anyway, whichever one it was.

13. i live about 2 miles from Fort Bliss, Biggs Field, the Stealths fly over
about 1000 feet all the time. funny story...they have an air show here in October, i soloed when i was 16 years old, i was pointing out the different planes to my wife, the 'Prosac Poster Child' who couldn't care less... i pointed to the Stealth plane about 50 yards away, but she didn't know one from the other... when we got over to about 20 feet away, i said see the stealth ? no other plane around, but it really doesn't look much like an average plane...she still didn't see it...! there was a yellow tape around the F114 and a guard with a gun. he was amused with us, no one else was around, so i said," of course you cant see it it invisible!.. that really impressed her.. I told her to go over to the soldier with the rifle an ask where the invisible plane was. he kept a poker face when she asked, and very military like pointed over to an empty area of tarmac and said,"its right over there, Mam..." she looked really hard and excitedly chriped,..WOW, It really is invisable!!!"...at which point the crowd went hysterical. good thing she has a good sence of humor..:spank:

16. LOL!
Good thing she does indeed! Although significant props should also go to the soldier who kept a straight face and pointed!

Great story. Mrs. Robb would absolutely kick my sorry ass across the tarmac if I pulled that on her. :spank: Although one of her co-workers finally asked her yesterday why she has a "3+" Blackbird sticker on the car....

14. We live next door to Selfridge ANG Base and we see a lot of planes
going overhead, never a stealth though. We have a fighter jet (have no idea what kind as I am fighter jet illiterate) that constantly patrols the coast. (we are close to Lake St. Clair and the Canadian border as well) It gives me the heebies at four in the morning to hear them roaring overhead. It was also very strange during the flight moratorium after 9/11 that we were constantly hearing them flying overhead. It never used to bother me before * came to be despot extraordinaire, now I almost always pause...shame.

17. Saw an F-117 Once
Was flying as part of an airshow. Fairly quiet from my perspective. Loudest I've ever heard was a B-1 taking off at full thrust.
