For me:

1. Probably "Cold Mountain"
Or one of the Garrison Kiellor books. I've got about 6 of his and I've liked both of the ones I've read--"WLT" and "Lake Wobegon 1956".

8. I can't believe I haven't read it yet. I have a big stack of Ann Rule's books -
and I could have sworn that one was included. It wasn't. I had to go out and get it! I've read every other one except Small Sacrifices, and I'm working on her current one right now (Smoke, Mirrors and Murder).

11. Hey, I just finished that very book two days ago! It was the best of the series, I thought.
I saw the Golden Compass movie before I read the book. The movie wasn't impressive, the book was good, but I kept seeing the movie in my brain as I was reading the story. Don't know if that was a good thing or not. It's a very creative series, though, and a bit deeper than the Harry Potter stuff.

I'm not sure yet what my next book will be. I'm currently reading a murder-mystery novel called "Pegasus Rising", so once I'm done with that I'll see what shows up. I'm not normally into that particular genre, but my hubby said it was pretty decent. It's well-written, so far.

I'll have to peruse the rest of your thread to get some other ideas! :D

:hi:

19. Read a long, long time ago...perhaps I oughta pick it up again
Fascinating read that defies classification. Not REALLY about Zen OR Motorcycle Maintenance.

However, THAT book led me to read many other books about Zen which was a wonderful journey that I'm very glad I made.

I hope that you enjoy "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" as much as I did.

26. :D
A couple of people have told me I should read it. I don't really have any interest in Zen... the whole thing seems kind of abstract for my brain. But from what I've heard it sounds like an interesting story.

Welcome to DU, by the way! :bounce:

35. The closest thing to ZMM is "Travels with Charley" by Steinbeck
ZMM is the musings of a very bright guy travelling by motorcycle across country with his son. The thing about zen in the book was the Zen concept of "Mu" which I will not try to explain here. That got me started.

Imagine some crazy religious people coming along and telling everyone that the real message of Christianity cannot be found in the Bible or in the familiar rituals or in the hymns it can only be found in "direct experience" that is beyond the realm of discourse and description. That's what Zen and Zen masters are like. The famous Zen masters seem like harmless madmen, but they are really trying to plod others into arriving at their own realization. It's crazy, because thinking and talking will not get you all the way there. As one zen master says, "Talking about Zen all the time is like looking for fish tracks in a dry riverbed."

In ZMM, Persig dips your toe into the zen waters with his discourse on "Mu." If you don't wish to go further than that, it's no big deal.
