3. different strokes for different folks
I have no idea why some women wear high heels or why some men wear goatees.

It's all body decoration, and different people like different things. Life's strange pagent and all...

Though from what I understand, some people actually become addicted to tattoos and piercings (and I do know some women who are addicted to shoes....).

They're still decorating your body, and it's a matter of taste as to whether it looks good whether it pierces the skin or not.

40. Having sex is risky.
If you're getting drunk and going to some dive over a bar, or letting your untrained friend do it in the basement with a clothespin, you're probably going to catch Hep C.

Done in clean environment with a sterile needle by someone who knows what they're doing, it's less dangerous than a lot of activities people engage in.

Life's about risk management.

73. eyebrows can be problematic, sort of flat area vs 2 sided.
Ears, noses, those have 2 sides where eyebrows can have the problem of being too flat so your body tries to push the piercing out. I'd rather risk my nose than my eye nerves and muscles also.

19. When I was young pierced ears were tacky
Virtually none of my generation had them, most of us pierced our ears when we were 35 or 40. Times change. My 99-year-old mother says it best, says she's four generations removed from her great-grandchildren so there's no way she can understand them - or judge them. Wise thinking, wise woman.

132. Same here. I'm 66.
The only women/girls (ABSOLUTELY no men!) with pierced ears (and nowhere else) were furriners like Eyetalians and such.

My mother didn't have pierced ears.
Her earrings were 'attached' by little thumbscrew-like devices or spring clips.
I remember the red marks when she'd remove them.
That musta hurt.

They want so badly to be accepted that they will disfigure their body so they can be part of something.

They are just sad sad people who feel a need to attract attention,, even if it is negative.

44. yeah maybe
Well if they have a piercing in a conspicious spot; that they like the looks of, they might also be seeking to have it noticed. If this is so, than they are accepting the fact that the attention may be from people who have opinions, opinions are based on judgment. This means that I have the right to judge what I see and be judgemental.

Of course you have the right to be judgmental, just understand it makes you sound like a sanctimonious douchebag. Call me crazy but I thought liberals were supposed to not be that petty.

Until Congress passes the Mandatory Hole in Your Head Act of 2008, it's really none of your business what people do with their faces, or why. Nor is anyone else's fashion choice an invitation for your armchair psychological analysis, Dr. Frist.

POV; however, my 56 yr. old self-esteem is in fine shape, tyvm. It was at 14 when I got my ears pierced, at 28 when I got my ears pierced again, and at 40 when I got another ear pierced. I figured I was such a sad, sad thing, I needed to do my nose (tastefully, of coursey ego wouldn't allow anything more than an itsy, bitsy, teeny, tiny stud) just after my 56th birthday. :eyes:

And then there are the freaks who are punching massive holes in their ears,

You can grow up and take out the studs - but how the hell do you fix your ears now that you have inch wide onion rings in place of your lower ear?

36. Depending on the piercing, and the person, they can be hot.
I plan on getting my eyebrow and nose done, as soon as I find a reptuable place around here.

Beyond purely aesthetic reasons, people can get them done for spiritual or esoteric reasons. I have a friend who's a ceremonial magician who got a tongue piercing as a magical act to be mindful about his words.

They don't look good on everyone, or even most of the people getting them, but it's purely subjective. Personally I don't understand how people can walk around looking like they came out of a J. Crew ad, but to each his/her own.

except for the one attached to my husband. No adornment there...

Anyway, what the hell? I don't care if someone pierces their whole face.

I thought this young lady who worked at the local 7-11 had a cancer removed, she wore a band-aid for a long time. Come to find out, they were making her cover up an eyebrow piercing! She told me someone in the Rockledge store had one, so she tok off the band-aid.

The piercing looked cool, the band-aid, not so much.

49. Don't care much for it myself (except for ears), but if that's what others like, why not?
Personally, I'd prefer to stay untatted and mostly unpierced, but I guess people can decorate themselves however they like, even if some others may find such decorations odd.

58. Why wouldn't they?
Humans have been piercing, tattooing, painting, burning, amputating, and morphing themselves for as long as there have been humans.

For every person who considers the practice disgusting, there is another who finds it beautiful or spiritually rewarding.

i hope i don't need a :sarcasm: tag but i probably do

there are some exceptions but most folks i've known with piercings, other than earrings, are losers who have given up and accepted their loserhood and are trying to bravely pretend that it doesn't matter to them that they will never have lasting love or success

84. I had my ear pierced once.
Which is probably why I'll never ever ever let it happen again...

My ear got pierced when my brother stepped on a bee's nest by accident. Of course, he was older than me so he could run faster. He got two or three stings. I got 12 or 13, one of which went right in one side of my earlobe and out the other.

I've always thought it was odd that most people who are against "body piercings" don't seem to include voluntarily poking holes in ears. I particularly detest it when I see babies/little girls with pierced ears - that is wrong, wrong, wrong.

OK, so there is always an exception to the rule. Let me rephrase. Most people get piercings because they find them lovely except for those few people that hate themselves so much they feel they can heal the hurt with some lip metal. :)

99. Not even necessarily that they find it lovely, sometimes it's a matter of what feels right to them.
I personally dislike peircings and like long hair, hence why I have long hair and no peircings. Yet I can think of numerous people who I've found incredibly attractive that had short hair and/or piercings. :) My personal feeling towards those things doesn't change whether I find them attractive or not. It has more to do with just being me than anything else.

Although I DO think my long hair is pretty... :P And I've said so numerous times 'round here. But even if I didn't, I'd still have it. Because that's just what feels right to me. Me having short hair would feel as wrong to me as it would for your average straight-laced straight guy to be forced to wear frilly pink dresses. Worse even, since you can't change your hair as easily as you can change clothes.

120. Yes, true..
I was using lovely in a very general way. As in a person that gets a piercing must not find it all that deplorable and must find something good about the decision to get pierced. I used "lovely" as a shorthand. :)

129. This reminds me of one of those things we had to examine in my humanities class
... one of the handouts described-

The Snacirema People (okay, you read it backwards already) who had strange rituals and that included the men and women of the tribe scraping certain areas of the body and painting other areas of the body ritualistically. By the end, it was apparent that we need to understand how generations of cultures display themselves and how their cultures pass this on to the next generation. Bikers were doing stuff like this decades before it was more acceptable in the mainstream to have 3 piercings in one ear lobe as a nurse assistant. The elderly quite accept that 25 year old person now-a-days, don't they.

Meanwhile, I can't wait to see how we transform ourselves physically post Snacirema fascism period! :+
