we can have fun with this, i think...

1. Why does someone named Hypnotoad have a Bender avatar?

2. Why is Priyanka a lioness?

3. Who is that in the photo of RadioLady's sig?

i'll write more if i think of them....

6. here you go
‘Blue tires’ is a reference to the “Gran Turismo” racing video game series…In the game, cold or fresh tires are blue on the on-screen indicator…Before I joined DU, I was using this name on a GT forum, and since it is such a weirdly unique username, I’ve carried it over to other forums as well (my first five or six username requests on DU were rejected, and I was getting frustrated.)

Edited on Sat Jan-12-08 12:30 PM by madinmaryland
madatmaryland or madtowardsmaryland!

:hi:

Anyway, I picked my sn in May 2004, as the swiftboater liars were ramping up their attacks on John Kerry. Needless to say I was really pissed and had just moved to maryland. Hence the name.

On edit: I assume yours has to do with terrapins (Maryland). turtlensue = terrapins result/ensue?

45. You are correct, ikhor.
I used to think he was the god of craftsmanship.

It's so hard keeping the family tree straight.

http://touregypt.net/featurestories/sokar.htm

"However, Sokar was associated with the Memphite god Ptah as the
synchronistic Ptah-Sokar even before Sokar's association with Osiris.
This was perhaps an easy link because Ptah too was a god of craftsmanship.
In fact, Sokar took Ptah's consort, Sekhmet as his own.
In this form, Ptah-Sokar associates the wealth of the soil and its power of growth."

33. I say, "Whoa!"
Edited on Sat Jan-12-08 11:36 PM by Whoa_Nelly
And used to say Whoa Nelly! when I was a kid.

It was from the "Whoa, Nelly!" as heard on 1950s TV "Roy Rogers Show".

Rogers, sidekick, Pat Brady, would drive the jeep named "Nelly Belle", and would yell, "Whoa Nelly!"
I also remember watching old movies back then too, and seeing Brady riding a stubborn mule he called Nelly.
He was always saying "Whoa, Nelly!" to her.
I always thought it was a fun thing to say ;)

40. Whoa_Nelly once told me that....
Who-Nelly is a phrase heard often in Oklahoma. It may have started on the earliest of Roy Rogers shows with a mule named Nellie. It is also often attributed to a jeep from the same show named Nelly Belle

47. there used to be one (more of a wiki than a faq)
but i can't seem to find it right now...maybe someone else knows where it is...

and the crickets chirping thing is not specific only to DU...it just derisive way of saying there is silence (i.e., so quiet that you can only hear crickets chirping) when you would expect people to speak up or whatever
