Seriously. She's just begining to discover her inner "Gloria Steinem" . She got in trouble yesterday at school for the very first time-EVER. Some boy in her gym class refused to pass her the ball (they're playing indoor soccer) because "girls can't score" so she kicked him in the leg and told him to go to hell. I told her she probably shouldn't have kicked him in the leg, and she said "I would have gotten in worse trouble if I kicked him in the balls". Wow. You know, she's a stronger, more independent woman at 13, than I am at 40 (ish). I think I might have created a monster though. I woke her up early yesterday and we talked about Hillary's win in NH and what a landmark it was, and Boom! She's kicking boys in gym.

1. Chocolat. Babette's Feast. Amelie. Blue. The Star Wars movies.

If you're looking for movies that have a woman who is sure of herself and has a healthy ego and doesn't let others walk all over her.

11. Both are great. Blue is a beautiful film, with Juliet Binoche (of Chocolat)
Blue is the first of a trilogy films on the three French motto words - liberty (Blue), equality (White), fraternity (Red).

I highly recommend Blue - it's brilliant film-making, so your daughter should be exposed to it just for that; plus it's brilliantly acted, and a fantastic story.

12. The Secret of Roan Inish
great for every age. one of my favorites. also agree on Amelie. every female I know likes that movie (including me).

Cradle Will Rock is a nice take on the WPA.

Stop Making Sense because the Talking Heads have had a female member all along and she rocks.

Run Lola Run! (Lola Rennt) - another one of my favorites. a female lead.

Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke if she hasn't seen those.

16. Yes--another vote for Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke.
There is a whole universe of strong women/girls in anime.

23. For feisty girls, movies with early teen girl protagonists
Whale Rider

and some oldiess:

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn--Irish-American girl growing up in the slums in early 1900s Brooklyn
Jane Eyre--The 1940s version with Joan Fontaine and Orson Welles
The World of Henry Orient--1960s movie about the friendship between two 13-year-olds
A World Apart--A young girl grows up as the daughter of white anti-apartheid activists in South Africa

24. she's probably already seen Mulan -
best feminist Disney film, I think

To Kill A Mockingbird?

Juno was pretty damn funny, I have to say - not sure what (teen) age it's good for, but the main character is hysterically funny and strong-willed.
