Why do people use powdered hot chocolate?
Edited on Wed Jan-09-08 10:17 PM by mycritters2
I just pop a cup of chocolate (soy)milk in the microwave and zap it. Much less powder at the bottom of the cup. Why doesn't everyone do this?

2. Because they're part of the 98% of tasteless, lazy, shitbrained uncultered America
Jesus, mycritters2, don't you know that if you can eat something from a box or a packet or a can that it's WAY WAY WAY better than a liberal communist-loving from-scratch version? Even if it takes more time for the processed shit?

For God's sake, woman, you're a cleric - why do you hate America?

5. I'm a UCC cleric. I not only hate America,
I hate white America! Someone in GD explained this to me, and I am grateful.

Hot chocolate out of a box--that seems pretty white to me.

12. Really. I don't make mine from scratch. I don't make mine at all.
I let someone else make it and I just zap it. I'm a lazy old cow.

25. yeah, and soy milk is just so tastey......
something like this is real hot chocolate....

This hot chocolate recipe calls for two different kinds of chocolate, and it's whipped frothy. The half and half cream makes for an extra rich cup of cocoa.

INGREDIENTS:
1 cup milk
1 cup half and half
8 tsp sugar
1 oz semisweet chocolate, chopped
1 oz unsweetened chocolate, chopped
1 tbs brown sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla

PREPARATION:
Heat everything in a saucepan, except the vanilla, until chocolates melt and sugar dissolves. Pour half into a blender and mix until foamy. Return to the saucepan, and add vanilla. Stir briefly then serve.

13. The proper way to make powdered hot chocolate
is to add the hot liquid s l o w l y to the powdwered chocolate while whisking or stirring into a slurry. That way all of the powder is well blended. . . . works for adding any hot liquid and powder.

I have always maintained this (my wife says dump the powder into the liquid) and I have been confirmed by Alton Brown - that is, my method has been confirmed by Alton Brown, Cardinal, Food Diocese.

:)

17. There you go...
Recently, I got hooked on Nestle's "Abuelita" hot chocolate, which I assume is aimed at a predominantly Hispanic market, but I love it. But now I can't find it anymore. Waah. Hope 7-Eleven brings it back someday.

16. The powdered mix is just "step 1" for mine
Before the milk is hot, the (12 oz.) cup contains the following:
1 packet hot chocolate mix
3-4 tbsp Ovaltine
2 Dove milk chocolate pieces ~or~ 2 Hershey Kisses (whichever i have on hand at the time)

Yeah... "death by chocolate"
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

18. Because...
I take cocoa powder, REAL milk, a pinch of cayenne, a pinch of cinnamon, a pinch of nutmeg, a few drops of vanilla, and heat it up through a secret process. Various chocolate chips or candies are optional.

And top it off with freshly whipped cream.

It doesn't last long enough for much powder to precipitate to the bottom, but a quick stir or swishing takes care of any that does.

26. 'cause it doesn't go bad as quickly as milk products.

That's why we keep it in the house. I use a teaspoon or two in my coffee for flavoring since it's around here for my gdaughter. She loves hot chocolate in the cold months.

31. I used it in December when
my electricity was out for a week following our ice storm. I could heat water over the gas logs in the fireplace and then add it - and a bit of powdered milk - to the powdered hot chocolate. It was nice to have something warm to drink. Fixed a cup every night before going to sleep in my cold dark house.
