Why did the US government quit making 50 cent pieces?

Saw one from the early '70's yesterday. It was the first one I'd seen in ages.

1. I think they still make them...
just nobody ever uses them... next time you're at a bank, ask them for $5 worth to spend around, and see the weird looks you get from cashiers...

3. They're still made, and still out there
my mom works at a restaurant, and buys them from the register whenever they pop up. that, and $2 bills, Eisenhower $1 coins, or older paper money like silver certificates. Youd be amazed how much is still out there.
