Question to any jews here
Edited on Sat Feb-07-04 12:32 PM by Kamika
If someone gets insulted by a very religious jewish person like how anti - semite she is what a nazi she is, and white supremasist, and how she want jews dead (note this is stuff the accuser in question would say) without anything to base that on. And constantly batter her.

Then this person calls this guy a nut fundie jew.

Is this insensitive and should be prohibited?

(Disclaimer: I am not racist, I have nothing against jews, muslims or christians, whites, blacks, asians, indians, straight or homosexual, or any sort of person what so ever, I judge persons after their persona not their religion or skin color or ethnicity. And I am an all around nice person. Please don't ban me. all celebrities are impersonated, any resemblence to real persons dead or alive is totally fictional, batteries not included.)

23. perhaps you get the "anti-semite" reaction because
you just made a blanket negative statement about jews. a few words like "some" jews would help. better yet, "some of the jews i've known". this way you acknowledge that people are individuals, and that not all jews act in unison, or purely due to their judaism.

oh, and, "superiority, intimidation and control"? where does that come from???

5. I dunno
Edited on Sat Feb-07-04 12:07 PM by Mass_Liberal
I'm jewish, and the one thing I'm sure of is that all the conservative jews that I personally know annoy me an extreme amount. There are a bunch of conservative jews at my High School who always talk about how:

1. Israel has such a great army
2. Palestinans should all die
3. Sharon is such a great guy
4. It was our land before the Palestinians
5. Israel kicked ass in various wars

It gets reaally annoying. It's like converting Judaism to a form of nationalism. urrrg. But I wouldn't call them jews as an insult. I'd find other insults to make them curl up in a ball and cry. ;)

47. Well
I agree with:

#1: It is an awesome army, only one of three truly modern armies in the world (US, GB, Israel, France gets a 1/2)
#4: Was.
#5: Definitely true. Israeli War of Independence (1948-49, outnumbered 100x). Six Day War (1967, Preemptive strike destroyed Egyptian Air Force, Israel captured a ton of land). Yom Kippur War (1973, Israel successfully defended itself against suprise attack by Egypt and Syria on the holiest day of the Jewish year). Lebanon Invasion (1980s, no matter how you see its justification, Israel certainly won). Iraq Air Strike (1982ish, Israeli fighter jets took out a nuclear facility in Iraq so Saddam Hussein could not produce nuclear weapons.)

Judaism is nationalism, yo, it's a tribal (vs universal) religion-joining is hard unless you marry in or have Jewish blood, just the nature of things.

26. your intent may not have been to offend, but....
merely inserting a "in my experience" at the beginning of an otherwise insensitive remark only helps a very little bit.

better to acknowledge that any generalization has exceptions. "in my experience, jews ..." is still bad because it implies that all jews behave a certain way. "some of the jewish people i have known ..." works better.

also, where possible, don't single out one group. the statements you made about jews would apply to many people of many religions or even of other, non-religious groups. so "some of the hyper-religious people i have known ..." would have been better still, e.g.

28. I'm Thinking That Your Friend Probably Speaks Before He Thinks
about what it is that he's actually saying and how his words might be interpreted. I see a lot of that here on DU particularly from the younger members. Flippant comments and shooting from the hip can be a recipe for disaster.

Indeed your friend may not have intended his words to sound as they did, he probably refused to admit the possibility that they were poorly chosen and were cause for concern. I've seen folks on other forums do the same thing despite the fact that it was against their own best interests.

29. Jew here, checkin' in
In my experience, when someone's slammed as an anti-semite for a criticism of Israel or one of its policies (am I too far out on a limb in guessing that's what's up here?), what you're often dealing with is a zealous Zionist who, lacking an argument, goes immediately for an ad hominem. NOBODY wants to have to defend one's self from a charge of racism, so eventually, people keep their yaps shut instead of proffering criticisms of Israel. It's even happened to me, which is so utterly laughable I hardly know where to begin. I've even had family members accuse me of "self-loathing" for suggesting that some of Israel's policies were not only immorally violent and arguably genocidal, but destructive to Israel's own long-term interests. What you need to do when it happens is stay on-topic. Make it clear that you're discussing Israel the political entity as distinct from Judaism the religion, and reinforce your criticisms by restating, rephrasing and underscoring them. That won't satisfy a person who sees Israel as indistinct from Judaism itself, but you're covering your ass, not trying to convert a true-believer. Using an epithet related to Judiasm (or even one that could be stretched into one, however tortuously) is playing into such zealots' hands. And be sensitive - you're dealing with a historically oppressed people who've come to internalize and identify with a country they don't even live in, and may have never even visited. Go easy on the Jewish people, and lean heavily on the murderers in the Knesset.

That's what happened.

My problem is really that I see no difference between a jew, christian and muslim, if someone behaves badly I'll let him/her know that.

I wish I would be able to think in terms of "they are like that" and "they are like this" like so many others do, maybe I'd be able to stay out of trouble more.

And yeah I also seen how jews are called self haters by others it's pretty funny, especially when the guys calling them self haters are just fundie christian rightwingers and not even jews themselves

I have a friend in Israel, and she was called a nazi by an American jew on yahoo when she told him how she disliked orthodox jews :P

36. YIKES!
Yeah, an Israeli getting called a Nazi by an American Jew pretty much sums the phenomenon up. It's my understanding that a good many Israeli Jews are utterly appalled by things like the wall (there may yet be some still living who remember the Warsaw Ghetto, y'know), and the zealous mindset won't countenance any criticism of the Israeli government. It's like that government has actually supplanted god in the minds of such persons. It's terrifying, the rubbish humans are capable of embracing.

And in case you're keeping score at home, I've never been called a self-hater by a fundy Christian. Now I've got something to look forward to!

and don't give a fuck if an idiot considers that to be an anti-Semitic remark :)

Anyone who equates dislike of one person of a specific race/religon/sexual preference/gender/ideology with hatred of all that shit before the words "with" in this sentence has an opinion that is worthless to me. It is usually easier to pay no attention to people throwing around accusations of anti-Semitism and racism that have no basis.

Edited on Sat Feb-07-04 02:45 PM by absyntheNsugar
Left leaning Jews typically call the person a Zionist.

I'm (ethnically) Jewish myself and I do think the term anti-semite gets abused wayyyy too much. Someone who doesn't like the Likud policy of bulldozing homes for settlements is not an anti-semite.

45. Very true...
In fact many Palestinians are Jewish converts to Islam from long ago. After Jerusalem was torched and the dispora began, some Jews stayed, and when Muhammed spread Islam to the region, it spread there as well.

So we are talking about brother against brother over there.

And no, you are not a Nazi. Sharon is.
