OH NOES...it's raining AGAIN!
Edited on Sat Jan-05-08 09:54 PM by huskerlaw
Fellow Southern Californians, it's time to brace for round two of TEH STORM OF TEH CENTURY!!!

:D

On edit: I truly hope everyone is safe, warm and dry. But as a Midwesterner, the "sky is falling" news coverage of this storm is highly amusing.

9. Ah, it figures
believe it or not, we're expecting rain in Minnesota tomorrow. It will freeze nicely over the foot of snow we already have on the ground. :toast:

14. Ewwww!
I don't miss that...at all!

I grew up in Nebraska, so I'm well versed on the nastiness that weather can bring. Hence the amusement with what passes as bad weather here. Though I will say that I've never seen 2 inches of rain cause flooding at quite the level we saw last night. That's what happens when there's no drainage system! Whee! ;)

And then, of course, there are the mudslides. Which are no laughing matter, but thankfully we've been mostly spared thus far.

21. I saw a lot of that in AZ, staying with my dad
just a couple inches of rain after a season of drought and it's like a flood there. So strange...

15. Now KW, let's show a little Lib/Pro compassion, yes? People are being flooded out up here...
Nevada Levee Break

A levee broke along the Truckee Canal in Fernley, Nevada, trapping an estimated 3,500 people. They were being rescued by U.S. Navy helicopters and 10 school buses, said Trooper Chuck Allen, of the Nevada Department of Public Safety, in a broadcast interview. The flooding is about 35 miles (56 kilometers) east of Reno in Lyon County.

A 30-foot section of the levee broke about 4 a.m. local time, Allen said. About 800 homes are flooded with at least 3 feet of standing water, he said.

16. I want to be clear
that I'm not trying to make light of people who are actually in danger or have lost their homes. They have my complete sympathy.

However, the news coverage down here is, in fact, of puddles.

23. Fair point
I apologize for seeming insensitive to the actual devastation that has occurred in other parts of the state.

They have shown news footage of what's happening up there, and I feel horrible for the people who are suffering.

But again, my post was directed at Southern Californians and was meant to make fun of the ridiculous news coverage of what's happening down here. I'm sorry that came off badly, I didn't mean to make light of a bad situation.

Stay safe and I'll continue to think of all of you who are in a more precarious situation than we are.

17. Sorry.
They have been building this set of storms up here on TV like it is going to be Armageddon. I truly feel for those who are being affected in such a severe way by it, but it does not take away from the Super Bowl magnitude hype our local media have given this storm for almost a week prior to this.

I have lived through severe storms. This is not a severe storm.

6. Shouldn't be too bad as long as the mountains don't move.
Given the fires from a few months ago, I'm a little worried about mudslides.

btw, I actually WENT OUT SHOPPING in WeHo in that freaking monsoon last night. And in the midst of a bad head cold. Yes, apparently I AM insane.

12. Oh, yeah, I realize that
which is why I added the edit. I know there are some areas that are in danger right now, I don't mean to make light of that.

But what what I find funny was, for example, KCAL's coverage last night of a slightly-flooded intersection. Yes, Virginia, sometimes water DOES accumulate enough to cause splashing!

Oh my...I wouldn't go anywhere last night. Due almost entirely to my extreme fear of sharing the roads with natives under such circumstances. :scared:

27. My almost-93-year-old mother called me from Massachusetts at 7:45 this a.m.
"What's going on out there?!"
"We're okay, mom. A little more rain and wind than usual, but we aren't having floods, and the roof hasn't blown off, nor has a tree severed our house."

28. And do they have mountains like these in the Midwest?
These things form a rain shadow that captures most of the precipitation and sends it careering down fire-devasted hillsides.

Do they have that in the midwest?

29. Please read some of my responses upthread
I've apologized MANY times for appearing unconcerned with the mudslide potential. That wasn't my intent.

I was, however, making fun of the news coverage in Los Angeles, which consisted of showing cars driving through PUDDLES while the newscaster described the horror of being wet.

THAT is funny, and THAT I will not apologize for mocking.

in LA, anyway.

The streets flood super fast, but so far we've been spared mudslides and the worst of the rain, so we really can't complain (too much)! ;)

35. My Los Angeles-raised father called it a "major storm".
I replied, not in the midwest. I can clearly remember tornadoes, rain so thick that you could not see out your car front window even with the wipers on maximum, and as others have said, add ice into the factor (much less giant hail) and you get shorting power transformers filling the sky with light of unusual color due to the heavy metals involved.

Then again, the hills around here are saturated, so if they slide and homes are lost, that could be counted as major in some way. Being just one of the seven signs of the Apocalypse that are found in socal.
