Edited on Sat Jan-05-08 01:21 PM by datasuspect
i remember people here in the US would go to mexico to load up on goodies.

but in the heavily touristified shopping districts i notice lots of furriners in fancy stores buying our murkan junk extra cheap (exchange rates have something to do with this).

the newsfucks seem to think this is a good thing.

what's next, donkey shows in times square?

2. yup. Treasury secretary said this was one of the goals
of the diminished dollar.

Have you tried to get a hotel room in NYC lately? A mid-level hotel room starts at $400/night. Last time we were there in October 2007 (courtesy of a company paying our room rate) the concierge said the hotel (a Doubletree) hadn't had hardly any Americans in it for at least a year - if you're rich enough to stay in Manhattan, you stay at the Regency or Waldorf or somewhere, not a Doubletree. The "regular" hotels are full of 'furriners' ;-). We saw several FAMILIES (multiple rooms) carrying TONS of stuff to their rooms. We asked them why they were visiting (my husband has never met a stranger - will talk to anyone, anywhere, anytime about anything) and they said they were in NYC to shop.

5. Ah, don't you worry.... just a short interlude.
We won't have any money anymore soon... Both Europeans and Americans will be very, very glad when the Indians and Chinese will come over shopping three years from now. And what's more, it serves us right.

14. You exploited them? I had? Personally? When? Were we slaveowners as well?
Multinational corporations had exploited, and so did the indigenous peoples those corporations employed at top levels... and with China saying they've pulled 1/3rd their population out of poverty, never mind the piracy rates the same corporations condone, "exploitation" is a many faceted word.

I don't believe in "sins of thy father". The past is for historians and wankers. The present and future have more relevance. We can learn from the past...

19. I was in NYC the first week of December.
I was waiting in line to get into the Wollman Rink. I was holding a small conversation with some men with Irish accents. We got to talknig about zamboni machines and their purposes.

20. Their wives were shopping while the guys did some tourtist things.
That's my bet.
Today there was an Italian family on the subway. They were having fun taking photos on the train and trying to mimic the announcer's accent. I'm hoping that all the tourists will be gone by tomorrow. Please. Please.
