I have no heat...
For some reason my furnace quit and it is 50 chilly degrees in my house.

Thank goodness it has warmed up to 30 outside (we had highs in the single digits the last couple of days) so I think we can hold out for a day or so.

I called for service at 9am and was told they would call back. It is 1pm and no one has called :(

So here I am, lying in bed with two dogs and a cat to keep me warm. Mr MB went to work and will stop by my stepdad's home to pick up a small electric heater to use tonight.

Oh, and did I mention that my energy bill was $475 for 11/20-12/20...:nuke::mad:

5. A high energy bill in a house that has all thermostats set at 64
when we are home, and 60 when we are not.

11. It is an older furnace, but when we had the inspection
they told us it was good for another 10-15 years with proper maintenance. That is about how long we intend to be in this house, so it seemed fine to us. If they don't call soon, I will just make an appointment for service for Monday morning, because at this point, I am p/o'd that they haven't called and don't want to give them the extra $100 weekend call fees.

Stay warm with your animals! They should help a lot!

And your energy bill.... :scared:

Hope things get better fast!

7. California Peggy :)
50 degrees is mighty cold to you, I know. Mr MB grew up in LA and he detests the cold. A couple of days ago it was 4 degrees with negative 25 windchills and I really thought Mr MB was going to curl up in a fetal position and just call it quits. He could not shake the cold for hours after we hauled the trash out.

Thank goodness for the furbabies. They really do help. And at least I have power - I can always go bake something to heat up the kitchen a little.

14. Is your oven self cleaning?
Nothing like an 800 degree oven to warm up the house!

16. hmmmm
did not consider that.

I have never used a self cleaning oven (lame, I know), and would have no idea how to do it...but it does say self-cleaning on it....

18. Run the clean feature...
You will not be able to use your oven for three hours but it will heat up your kitchen big time.

28. Or, make cookies for LMB or bake something for dinner.
It will make the room a little warmer for a few hours. For that matter, making a pot of soup or pasta on top of the stove will throw off some heat and provide you with something warm and comforting to eat.

I know what a 50 degree house is likely -- a bit too chilly to ever feel comfortable. Watch the thermometer and see if the house is cooling off even more. If it holds at around 50 degrees the house should be okay for a few days. Check your cellar/basement temperature too (for the pipes.)

Does your hot water come off the furnace? If not, take a shower to warm yourself up and the bathroom at the same time.

29. Mmmm cookies....
I actually just took a super hot shower, and have decided to break down and kick on the electric heat in the one bathroom because the seat was just too damned cold.

6. I lived in a really crappy house in college
Edited on Sat Jan-05-08 01:16 PM by jasonc
it was very poorly insulated and drafty. For 1 month, our gas bill alone was $535.00

That was a big bill to pay for us college students.

I hope you get it fixed soon.

9. I keep the thermostats low and I have not really felt cold or drafty
in here, but this is our first winter in this house so there is more to be discovered I am sure...

$535 is one hefty bill - I assume you were somewhere in the frozen midwestern tundra....

:hi:

Opted out of it at the closing in June. :banghead:

As long as I am in bed, I am fine. The dogs really do help and at least the temps have risen from a few days ago.

We just signed up for one a few months ago. For my peace of mind mostly. I am going to set up a service call next week for my pathetic (and relatively new) dishwasher.

20. Mr MB was supposed to set up a maintenance program
with the furnace folks so that emergencies like this would be at no cost, but he forgot to do it...those SoCal boys don't know much about dealing with cold

It is funny, we have yet to turn the furnace on this year, coldest it has gotten at night is like 42, with 60s-70s during the day.

Mr MB is already bundling up once the daytime temps drop below 60 here - and I mean bundling - hat, gloves, etc.

Such a pansy considering he is 6'6" at 275lbs....

22. oh, Malta Blue- that is lousy
It happened to me about a year ago and my furnace was only four years old, as my brother installed it for me when I bought my house. Luckily my Dad is handy and he deduced that it was the thermostat and replaced it for me to the tune of $50. I hope that it is painless, financially and otherwise. Put on extra layers and even a hat- that will help. Also, try some mental imagery. I work as a letter carrier and sometimes I have to put that picture in my mind of the sunny beach, yeah- complete with a Corona and the hunky cabana boy. It works a little bit- at least until my mind starts to wander! Sending all the warm vibes and hot air that I can from sunny Colorado here.

25. Let's hope it is just the thermostat (fingers crossed)
I like the mental imagery idea. My mom lives in the caribbean on the beach - maybe I will call her and have her walk the beach so I can hear the waves :)
