5. Is it my imagination, or is the neck on your violin unvarnished?
Looks like it in that pic... just wondering because mine is too, for whatever reason. And so is my little sister's. And up until now those two were the only ones I'd seen that had unvarnished necks. :)

25. It is...
I think simply because the varnish would wear off with all that shifting. I don't think I've ever seen a fiddle with a varnished neck; but I may be mistaken.

59. That's odd, because I've never seen one unvarnished other than yours and the two I mentioned. :P
Most of the other violinists I've known can never play mine properly because there's more resistance than they're used to and they can't shift properly. :) I only noticed that my little sister's was like that when she was having trouble figuring out a bit of shifting and I showed her how to do it. Then I realized her violin had felt normal to me, it wasn't all slippery like everone else's.

I'm rather partial to 'em. This is the closest I've got to a 'family portrait', even though there are a few people missing. This one has my father, both of my brothers, all five of my kids, my SO, my oldest son's SO, my nephews...I think that's it.

We left the cats, rodents and reptiles at home, though.

26. I always thought it was a Mourning Dove --
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mourning_Dove

The Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura) is a member of the dove family Columbidae. The bird is also called the American Mourning Dove, and formerly was known as the Carolina Pigeon or Carolina Turtledove. It ranges from Central America to southern Canada, including offshore islands. Many individuals in northern areas migrate south to spend winter within the breeding range where January temperatures are above −12° Celsius (10°F).

Habitats include various open and semi-open environments, including agricultural and urban areas. The species has adapted well to areas altered by humans. The bird is abundant, with an estimated population of 130 million birds. In many areas, the Mourning Dove is hunted as a game bird for both sport and its meat. Its plaintive woo-oo-oo-oo call is common throughout its range, as is the whistling of its wings as it takes flight. The species is a strong flier, capable of speeds up to 88 km/h (55 mph).

Mourning Doves are light grey and brown and generally muted in color. Males and females are similar in appearance. The species is generally monogamous, with two squabs (young) per brood. Both parents care for the young for a time. The species is a prolific breeder, and pairs will often have several broods per year. In warm areas, one pair may have up to six broods a year. Mourning Doves eat mainly seeds, including those of both native and introduced plants.

76. Hey, I had one live to 22 ....
and to tell you the truth, I never gave her any kind of special care. She got cat food from the supermarket and annual visits to the vet. As she got older, she got a little arthritic and I set up a heating pad set on low and covered it with a towel. That was HER SPOT and she spent a lot of time there. She also got a little hard of hearing the last year or so and she would "yell" at me when I got home from work. She was really in perfect health (other than being old) until the last couple of weeks of her life. Then her liver started to fail. Death was imminent, so I had her put to sleep in my arms.

66. Heh. These aren't puppies or kitties
With a parrot you're basically dealing with a wild animal who doesn't particularly understand (or care) that biting hurts you. They bite at each other all the time in the wild and just get a beakfull of feathers. The whole skin concept is new to them.

These guys can be the most loving and affectionate companions, but there's always an element of risk if they get startled or upset. I'm thinking of getting a T-shirt made that says "Proud Parrot Owner -- ask me about my band-aids"

When we got him he was badly clipped. He actually fell a couple times and cracked his beak. Now that he's fully flighted he's a lot more confident about his balance.
