Even with a prescription sleeper. And here I am - I woke up at 7:00 and couldn't go back to sleep.

1. Couldn't you count cats?
It's really hard on your mind and your body when you don't get enough sleep. Instead of taking sleeping meds, can you find out the reasons for the sleep problems and treat that? Is it stress, change of life, or just awful pain of some kind, that's disrupting your sleep?

2. i've counted cats until i've grown fangs and claws
the reasons have been treated and treated; the chemical is the last resort, and it works.

this is an isolated case of can't-sleep. i don't want to miss a minute of life right now. i want to be awake and aware of what goes on around me. on some level, i know that i chose to stay awake last night.

the cats i counted last night were Moosey, who insists upon showing his affection by sleeping on me and as close to my face as he can get. and i counted Mildread, our miracle cat - a feral who tamed herself. one day she came a few feet into the garage and said "hmm... it's warm in here... and i smell better food up there..." and now she is completely tame when no "strangers" are in the house.

:hi: thanks for your thoughts.

10. Cheap Psychological Trick for the curing of insomnia: try. to stay. awake.
Just make an active effort to stay awake. The effort your brain will put in to make you go to sleep while you're doing that should be help conk you out. (This really works.)

15. When I can't sleep at night, I do important things like washing the cats
Yo may have already tried this, but it's worth a second try as it is great fun for both the pets and sleepless humans:

How to Wash a Cat

1. Put both lids of the toilet up and add 1/8 cup of pet shampoo to the water in the bowl.

2. Pick up the cat and soothe him while you carry him towards the bathroom.

3. In one smooth movement, put the cat in the toilet and close both lids. You may need to stand on the lid.

4. The cat will self agitate and make ample suds. Never mind the noise s that come from the toilet, the cat is actually enjoying this.

5. Flush the toilet three or four times. This provides a "power-wash" and rinse".

6. Have someone open the front door of your home. Be sure that there are no people between the bathroom and the front door.

7. Stand behind the toilet as far as you can, and quickly lift both lids.

8. The cat will rocket out of the toilet, streak through the bathroom, and run outside where he will dry himself off.

9. Both the commode and the cat will be sparkling clean.

Sincerely,
The Dog

16. I've been up till 3 or 4 am the last few days too
sorting books, still. (I started this project before Christmas and have stacks of boxes all over the place. I'm up to 30 boxes of books to sell and I don't know how many are left because so many books are sitting on the floor b/c I want to put them with other books.

and then I waste time here.

my kids have been staying this late too - the joys of a holiday - I'm a night person but I have to be a day person most of the time.

18. oh, a go to sleep trick
lie down on your back. no or very low (night light) light. no music unless it's reaaaaally calming all the way through.

put your left hand on your abdomen and your right hand on your heart.

breathe through your nose slowly. breathe all the way down into your abdomen so that it rises. start with breath in your abdomen, then chest and slowly release the air in the opposite direction.

feel your heart beat. don't think about anything else. just concentrate on the slowness of your breath and the beating of your heart.
