I was supposed to leave for Iowa today, but had like a gazillion little things to do before hitting the road--oil change, return library books, buy cat food, laundry...stuff that got put on the back burner during Advent. So, my plan is to get up VERRRY early in the morning and leave before the sun's up. I'm not a morning person, so wish me luck!!

this is a big damn country. It looks like a hop skip and a jump from here to there--if you can hop, skip, and jump for 5 1/2 hours.

4. Some Americans don't get it.

When I had accepted the call (job) in Iowa, but hadn't moved from central Illinois yet, a friend in Virginia (out east--where the small states are) asked why I didn't just drive over on Sundays, preach, and go home until I got moved. "Because," I pointed out kindly..."it's an EIGHT HOUR DRIVE."

It had never occurred to him that you could drive between two adjacent states and have it take that long. I should invite him out here, I guess.
