My favorite Star Trek female...
Early episodes of the show had people thinking it was pretty radical to have women aboard a spaceship; but they were, of course, relegated to roles of nurse, communications officer, and similar girly-girl work. Even so, Nichelle made her character tough, independent, and thoroughly feminine. I like to think it's because that's the way she is. :-)

I wish I had an exact quote, but I saw it on TV once and always liked it.

She spoke of an exchange she'd had privately with Gene Roddenberry, back during the original series. She told him that she knew he was using Star Trek for political commentary on things like equality and racism, and he was only getting away with it because he was setting it in the future.

In reply, she recalled him saying, "Shh. The rest of them haven't figured that out yet." :)
